Hey guys...As always thanks for the help. I was curious what i could use besides thread, for the base wrap of the weave. I usually use mettalic thread, but i have seen picutes of a thread or coating to first put down.
Sincerely,
Dan Colville

You could mask off the area to be wraped and spray paint it as a base. Let dry well then wrap over. Mask and scoff with a fine pad or sandpaper

HT Metallic or Hologram braid material in 1/8" widths works well as a base wrap or underwrap.

I just completed a butt wrap where I carefully glued a piece of aluminum foil as an underwrapping. My primary thread color was teal on top of a black blank. I used a glue stick as the adhesive to get the foil to stick. I thought it turned out very nicely. I took great care in not getting any wrinkles in the foil though. I would guess that they could show through if they were there.

For the guides I used silver metallic thread as an underwrapping. A lot of extra work but worth it in the end. A real nice change of pace.

Hey Keith, can you post a picture of that? I'd really like to see that.

Warren.

Wish I could but I don't have a camera that can take good pictures of up-close objects. I am going to get myself setup sometime soon.

You can see the effect of underwrapping with metallic thread if you look at a couple pictures posted by Billy40 a while ago. He posted several pictures of guide wraps using light colored thread. That is what I tried to replicate.

As far as the aluminum foil underwrap on butt, it has pretty much the same look. The one thing about using light colors like teal with a shiny underwrap is I like to build the buttwrap with the lightest colored threads first and work out. The reason is to eliminate as much bleed thru of the darker threads.

I don't know if I am taking a risk of using foil or not when it comes to long term performance. I suppose there is the risk that the none of the finish on the buttwrap is coming in contact with the blank for long stretches. We'll have to wait and see.
