I was wondering what the advantages/disadvantages are of fitting guides in reverse??? I have heard it lessens the chance of line wrapping round the guide during a cast?? Can anyone shed some light on this?

I have done this (reverse mounting) with the guide closest to the reel seat when using Fuji's LC (Lowrider) and RSG guides on surf rods. The supporting arms of these guides appeared to require mounting 'backwards' on the first guide only. Other guides were mounted normally. I don't see that other guide models' geometry require this, but I could be mistaken.

I should note that these were specialized UH surf rods designed for use with relatively large conventional reels, like Accurate conversions of Penn 113/114 reels, and the concern was not for line wrapping around guides as much as preventing line contact with guides.

I don't think that's necessarily the case (I can't think of a single time that I've had the line wrap around any of my guides - perhaps I've just been lucky).

The line really doesn't care one way or the other - the actual ring location won't change.

The casting type frames, such as NSG have legs that round outwards and don't readily allow line to wrap around them. The spinning types, such as SVSG, due to their inward sloping legs could, I suppose, allow any line that gets around them to drop and tighten around the base.

I just haven't experienced any problems with line wrapping around guides, particularly fly line.

What kind of rod & what guides? The stripper on the LC's is moutned backwards because of the way teh 2 legs are shaped. AS previously stated. They are shaped like this to prevent line from wrapping around the guide on a cast, and subsuquently breaking off. I don't know how possible that is with braid, but I think when teh line wraps around the tip, you can put a slight amount of slack in teh line & shake the rod, adn teh line will slide off teh rod. As opposed to teh line getting stuck on teh guides & you having to figure out which direction teh line is wrapped then spin the rod 3 times, only to find out it was actually wrapped the other way, lol..

The reversing of the stripping giude is primarily for rods designed to be fished with braid or PE lines and spinning reels.

Many of the very top end Japanese rods such as the Carpenter's and Smith's even have all of the guides reversed.

I generally do reverse the stripping guide on this type of rod. I'm still not 100% convinced that it's necessary. But these big Japanese companies invest a lot of money in the developement of their rods, and if they think it's worth doing who am I to argue.
