Hi There,
I was just wondering if its overly difficult to make a rod with one of those trigger grip reel seats that leaves abit of the blank exposed, I'm gonna make my first rod in the next few month when i have aquired all the bits and bobs, but was wondering how you go about glueing one of these on with out getting the epoxy all over the exposed blank and making a right old mess???? John, I've done quite a few of these lately the biggest thing you have to make sure of is that you leave the exposed area of the seat completely bare and clean. Whatever type of bushing/arbour you use you have to measure carefully at both the bottom and top ends of the seat so that they dont interfere with the exposed blank. Use plenty of glue and wipe any excess from around the exposed area. Keep an eye on this area for a while as there may be a continual ooz of the glue until it begins to set up. I use 2 arbours in front of the exposed area and 1 behind it. Works for me though I'm sure others may have better or differnt techniques.

The exposed casting reel seats are bored to a specific ID. You'll want to get one as close to the diameter of the blank where you want it to fit as possible, or slightly smaller and then ream to fit. Too large will be a problem...
When I prepare the blank for gluing, I mask off that 3/4 to 1" area of exposure so that my scuff marks don't show after it's glued together. Amtak exposed seats that I've used are bored one size all the way through and require no arbors. Pac Bay is bored just at the exposed half of the reel seat and require one arbor under the threaded end of the barrel. No idea on Fuji. If you use Rod Bond for gluing, you can just wipe the exposed area once with alcohol and you won't have to worry about glue running out later. It's a paste. Putter Edited 1 time(s). Like Putter said just get a seat that has a slightly smaller ID than the OD at the spot you want the seat. They are not to diffucult to ream to fit. I too use RodBond and put the seat on as normal, letting the rodbond ooze out of the hole for the exposed blank. I take a papertowel with a little alchohol on it and clean it as I go. I worked with Mud Hole on my first three.I told them the blank I was useing and how long the butt grip would be.I got just what I was wanting.Fitt great! You want it snug but not tight where the seat will go.
Look at them in the stores and you will find you can do a much better job even on your first try no matter what problems you my have. Go For it! Mike Re: trigger reel seat (open)
