I got in some of Andy Dear's exotic cork yesterday and the dark pattern is the closest thing I've seen to the original "burnt cork" in the past 20 years. In fact, its distinct odor is a dead give-away that it's pretty much made with the same process. The only difference is that it's perhaps just a shade darker than the original type. But, I don't think you'll find anything else that comes this close. And, this cork appears to be a bit tougher than the original burnt cork was.
If you've been looking for real "burnt cork," this is it. .............. Re: Burnt Cork is Back

Hey guys,
The new Burnt Burl is really amazing stuff. In fact, am super excited about the whole lineup of exotic burl products. Next month will see another pattern of exotic burl released to the rodbuilding public. All of the Exotic Burl Products are available in 1/2" and 1/4" thickness, givnng you a variety of materials to spice up your grips. Expect to see some pictures on the photopage shortly of a grip I did with both patterns shortly..... Remember where you saw it first!!!! Andy Dear Lamar Reel Seats Re: Burnt Cork is Back

I have constructed three Custom Cork Handles with the Exotic Cork from Andy. I really looks great. I finished one of the custom cork handles with Tung Oil....oh boy what a nice finish and it really accents the cork and burl cork.
The only disadvantage is the hardness of the Exotic Burl cork rings. You really have to be careful when shaping the handles. I have two more handles in the production/creation mode as we speak. I know I will be ordering more Exotic Burl from Andy. Did I read there is a new line of color option(s)? Oh that would will be great. Hey, Andy, I'll try to drop a photo here to illustrate the Exotic Burl rings I incorporated in a custom rod. Michael T. Durgan tmaccustomrods.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
