to those who responded to my earlier post thanx for the help. i put it together with good results.

i used a twist i have not seen on this board before that has worked for me with hypalon and seems to be good with the eva.

i use alcahol as a lube, no glue. slide the grip down and add a shot or two, spin it to get the inside wet all around and lift up just a bit so some runs down the blank. work fast, slide it home with one smooth motion. you will have 20 or 30 seconds to make the final adjustment. the eva dries in a few minutes, a long hypalon grip takes a few hours. it does not move.

I still can't figure out why anyone would use Alcohol, Acetone, or any other non-glue as a lubricant?

Alcohol is an excellent lube for rubber. It works great under cork tape too, allows it to be moved around as need for a tight fit without the glue sticking to the blank. This is only momentary - 3-5 minutes at best - before the sticky tape begans to stick. I use this technique with excellent results - no cleanup too.

I guess if the grip has to stretch to fit the blank then it is a tight enough fit and it ain't going anywhere - they're hard enough to install with lube - I doubt you could move them without it. I am going to try one tomorrow to see how it works.

What holds the grip in place since you don't use any adhesive?? I'm confused. Wouldn't it be much easiet to use Rod Bond or other epoxy and just slide the grip into place

I have struggled with installing EVA grips for a long time until about a year ago when someone on this board suggested the following approach which I now use and it has made the installing of EVA grips very easy, quick and trouble free.
In any shop that repairs golf clubs they have a double backed sticky tape that is used to install rubber golf club grips. If you wrap a layer of this tape on a blank and then wet it with the activator solution that comes with it the tape becomes very slick and EVA will slide on the blank very easily. The activator solution takes 15 to 30 minutes to evaporate during which time you can adjust the postion of the EVA. After the activator solution evaporates the EVA will not move. And golf club grips get a lot more ruggeded use than any rod grip.
This approach is so much easier than heating the EVA or putting epoxy all over the blank and the EVA that I think that anyone that trys this technique will be converted.
By the way, thanks to whoever it was who recommended this technique to begin with.

you have to have a tight fit, friction holds it in place. i have used this on hypalon for heavey saltwater rods. i got the idea from a local tackle shop that puts hypalon on with compressed air. not having the gear fot that i thought i need a lube that will evaporate fast, k hol stays wet long enough to get the grip on and then evaporates.

So what do you do when there isn't a tight fit?

I'm sure there are a ton of grips installed this way, but I'm sure tehre are quite a few which end up loose after some time, or it the fit is't tight.

The installation process on the FAQs page is easy, quick and insures a permanent mount. No muss, no fuss. And you can stretch a grip ID a really long way. The key is where you put your epoxy, not how much. EVA or Hypalon installation should be a 30 or 40 second second task at best. Lubes, pushboards, compressed air, etc., really aren't necessary unless you just prefer using them.
