Twist on Marblizing - Watch out Putter!

As a token of my appreciation to Tom and the great crew that frequent this board, I have an idea I want to share, regarding a twist on the marbleizing technique. I have, or at least tried to post an example under the member gallery, (Joe Barnett). I would think this may have some application (especially to you Putter) LOL. Back in the late 40’s and early 50’s, my great uncle Hank Wokasch and my Grandpa Joe Wokasch were messing around with a technique that reminded me of marbleizing. They were painting lures and anything else they could get their hands on with this process (even fruit jars). I subsequently used the technique to do camouflage patterns on a number bow hunting accessories. I will try to explain as best I can, and throw the idea out for all to experiment with.

Basically what they were doing was to fill a container with water, which was large enough to present a good surface area and enough depth to allow for submersion of the item without overflow. Then they used an oil base enamel to introduce a floating layer of base color (not to thick), then complimentary colors are drawn in with a few drops of paint with a tooth pick. After you are satisfied with your color arrangement, take a thoroughly clean and dry item and gently submerge it in the container, twisting and moving slightly to give the swirl effect. Remove the item and hang to dry.

The finished product has that marbleized effect, and I would think that you could put a layer of finish and let it level. I know that you can get a very uniform effect on odd shaped items this way.

It does not look like the photos I tried to post actually posted so I will try again later. In the meanwhile, if you would like to see an example send me a personal email and I can forward a couple of pics to you…

Happy New Year one and All and thanks Tom K for this wonderful arena to share ideas.

P.S. Got my first issue of Rod Maker and your latest book. Packed full of good stuff…

I did the exact same thing when first attempting to "paint" blanks with a camouflage pattern.

Great tip. Thanks.

We did this in elementary school art class with pens and pencils and I always remembered it because it was so cool. I never thought of applying the technique to rod building. What a great idea!

Shawn had posted on this several months back and was going to show us a rod done in it; was going to use Coors as the medium to float the colors on.
