I'm building my first two piece over the winter.
I got a great one from Lami..... Questions: with 2 piece rods bought off the rack, inside the male section is a rubbery filling stuff thats not in my Lami blank....what is it, where do you get it, how do you install it? Thanks! Re: whats that inside a two piece rod?

Just put a gob of Rod Bond in there and wipe it smooth. It's just to keep dirt/water out. You can also get tiny corks at many hardware stores

I like using a small cork as Mike suggests. A little adhesive in the hole, insert the cork as far as possible, then trim flat with a razor blade. Nice look and easy to do.

I've used small cork (~0.25 in OD) for some rods, but when the ID of the section starts getting small, I"ve used a small peice of round chop stick from Chinese resturants. Also use round tooth picks for real small plugs. Use a good adhesive to glue in the plug. Do not use force to insert the plug. You do not need a very long peice of material to plug the ends. (<0.5") As Mike stated, you want to keep the water and dirt out-that's it. From my experience, it will also Keep the rod afloat when your son drops it in the water.

It's there to support the open end of the male ferrule, which could otherwise develop cracks as it goes oval under load. Firm EVA foam, cork or a dolop of RodBond will all support the opening and keep it from cracking.

Also, a rubber stopper can work, if you can find them. Chemistry or clinical or biology lab workers sometimes have draws full of them. Or you can punch some out yourself from rings of cork or blocks of rubber using a straight piece of copper pipe of a suitable ID that you have beveled as a cutter. Just pop out the plug with a dowel or barbeque skewer. And be careful that the blunt end of the tube / pipe is safely covered with an impenetrable guard, like a metal cap or brass male ferrule, lest you punch a nice plug of flesh out of the palm of your hand when you lean on the cork or especially the rubber. -Cliff Hall- Re: whats that inside a two piece rod?
