Has anyone had any luck with "coloring" reel seats? What did you use to do it? How did it hold up? Re: Reel Seats--coloring

What type seats are you talking about? Most metal or graphite/nylon types won't take a dye and paint doesn't stand up very well.
In the new issue of RodMaker, there is an article on how to reduce the barrel diameter a tad and then do a "marbled' epoxy job on it. There would be other similar applications that could be performed on the barrel this way as well. ................ Re: Reel Seats--coloring

I paint them all the time. They stand up well. I scoff with a fine pad, wipe the dust off then spray ( just to cover ) one or two dust coats of Plasti Kote car color on. Let dry, then coat with permagloss. I also mask off the crome or whatever and paint the nut so it will match the seat. I sand the threads so the nut does not fit real tight when painted and cleared Hope this helps Re: Reel Seats--coloring

The typical Fuji graphite type seat is what I'm thinking. I figured that it would have be epoxied. How does epoxy affect the feel?
The new RodMaker hasn't shown up yet, so all of my answers may be answered in it. Re: Reel Seats--coloring

I have also tinted Permagloss and applied to change up a reel seat. Has held up fine so far.

You could thin out epoxy and coat but the permagloss is a lot harder and will stand up better. And is thin Re: Reel Seats--coloring

I also like the Plasti Kote colors because of the nice metallic in the auto colors. They glow in the sunlight.
Got a metallic black. I just striped a 7' 2 Piece UL I made and am going to coat it with. Should look real nice Re: Reel Seats--coloring

Charles,
So far, I've only used the metalic Testors paints. Let the pigments settle and drain off the solvents. Have not seen any difference between the finishes of the tinted and untinted cures. The tinted permagloss does seem to take a little longer to setup and dry than the untinted. Regards Re: Reel Seats--coloring

I did a musky rod this year and painted the fuji reel seat red with Car paint and added 2 coats of Klass Kote Epoxy. I did scuff the entire reel seat and sanded down the threads. after 1 yr outside (i do all this to test my projects) and hard musky fishing the color is still outstanding and holding up well. Hope this helps.
