guide sizing

How do you decide on what size guides to use with different weight fly rods? I don't have trouble with the number or spacing of guides it is only selecting the proper sizes.

I decide based on the tip top loop size. It doesn't make much sense to use guides with a smaller ID than the tip top, plus it looks pretty goofy, to me at least. I use a size 10 stripper for 3 & 4 weights, a 12 for 5 & 6 and a 16 for 7 weights. I've never built a rod heavier than that, but can't imagine using a stripper larger than 16. I try to get to the smallest guide size within 3 or 4 guides after the stripper and then the smallest from there on.
