Hello Everyone
I've built two rods now..but I'm curious to know how you are determining the needed length & O.D. of a reel seat before I purchase one for a new 2 weight I'm building ? I built a 3 weight and the reel seat opening ended up just a about .020 thousands of an inch short but I was able to modify the "foot" on the reel that I had planned to use (fortunately it wasn't an expensive reel that I use on that rod) But I don't want it to happen again on the 2 weight I mentioned above. IS THE "Length" supplied by manufacturer... the LENGTH AFTER installing the reel seat into the cork and just measuring from the end of the cork to the end of the reel seat ? OR is it the entire length of the reel seat tube and wood insert before installing it (total length) AND..is there any particular guideline for WIDTH'S one might use ? Thanks! for any insight that you might be able to provide me before I go ahead with my purchase. Re: Need help with Measuring reel seat before purchasing

I'm with you brother. I used a saltwater unibutt for a small freshwater reel, the slot that the foot goes into was too wide. I know of no way to tell without having the seat to measure. Manufacturers or resailers should come up with a way, like some standard or something, so we can know what real fits what seat. I have a two weight, my freshwater reel fits perfect. the reel is a 40, whatever that means. I will learn all this someday, I will take that hill. Most reels other than fly reels have standard foot sizes. The graphite/nylon Fuji type seats will hold about any reel on the market. Beyond that, it's a bit of a crap shoot.
When you see "length" listed in the catalogs, it generally refers to the total length, end to end, of the seat. Not the distance the hoods will open from each other. .......... Re: Need help with Measuring reel seat before purchasing

I would like to Thank both Levi and Tom for their help with the Question above..I appreciate all the help I receive here on this great
board we enjoy. I was shocked to se 56 reads to the question in just a matter of hours...must be a whole lot of builders out there. If anyone else has any ideas...I'll be listening. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
