Hello. I have been working with regular and burl cork for a while now, but I am experiancing a recurring problem that is very frustrating. The burl is quite a bit harder than regular cork and when I sand the grip, the regular cork tends to for dips between the burl. I try to focus on teh burl to sort of equal out the amount of cork removed, but the same thing still happens. My question is what do you do to make sure that the cork remains flat while sanding? I don't want to have to deal with all of the stress related to uneven handles. Thanks. Re: How Do You Sand Burl/Regular Cork

Whenever you sand mixed items (reg, burl, eva.wood, etc) you need to use a sanding block. I use a piece of board with the sandpaper wrapped on it and stapled on the side you will not be using. That way when my grip is spinning, I hold the block against it and it CAN'T cut one deeper that the other Mike Re: How Do You Sand Burl/Regular Cork

What Mike said. If you try to do it by hand, you'll never get it even. If your grip is straight, use a block. On contoured areas, use something round like dowels, pipe, etc. Use small grit and very low pressure. Let the sandpaper do the work. With different materials, patience is a virtue. Ok. Thanks. I was sort of thinking that that would be my best choice. Re: How Do You Sand Burl/Regular Cork

I do something similar to Mike. I got some of those oversize emery boards for fingernails and i wrap them with my sandpaper. They appear to be about the right size. Then I do something a little different, I hold the sanding block at about a 30-45 deg angle to the handle. I run it up and down the handle quickly and it seems to take off the cork pretty fast if I want it to. Good luck Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
