rub on letters

How difficult is it to use rub off transfer letters on a rod-3 wt flyrod.?

I saw some at the hobbly shop and the shop felt it would be too difficult on a curved surface. I should have gotten them anyway.

I have read about using scotch tape to write on and then place it on the rods--does any one do this?

thanks

John kepka

I had custom dry transfers made with my logo. There are some very fine delicate lines. It is quite hard to get the logo to transfer directly to the blank and the curved surface is part of the issue. What I have found that has completely solved my problem is I put a coat of finish over my logo area. Put the rod in the dryer at 90 degrees for 3 - 5 hours and then put the logo on. The finish is set up enough that you can touch it and not damage it, but it still has enough tack that the logo sticks to the surface like nobody's business. When it goes down, it is down immediately, with very little pressure, and is down for good.

I've used dry transfer lettering for years. It looks great, but can be a pain to install. Expect some letters to refuse to adhere. Expect others that you do not want to adhere, to do so. Use a piece of Scotch Tape to lift any errant letters. Don't expect things to always go smoothly on the first go around. And yes, working on very small diameter blanks is more difficult than applying the letters to larger diameter blanks.

The fewer the number of letters, the less frustration, like a house of cards. Just some initials for identification purposes. It didn't help away; never found the rod, or the guy who stole it ! (Like Billy Falconer). -Cliff-

When I wright on a blank I put the first letter on, then put a piece of 1/4" tape under it and use this as a streight line to put the rest of the letters. Maybe this will work for the rub offs?

Make your own water slide decals, rub the letters on plain decal paper and you will have a simply way to put names on even the smallest rod.

Do you get decal paper at Hobby Lobby or such?

Call Jimi at Decal Connection and he'll put you on the correct decal paper for use on rod blanks. (Jimi will have decal paper for sale at the show in Charlotte in February.)

Scott at rodblanks.com may also be able to help in this regard.

Links for both are in the column on the left.
