Guide Feet Too Long

I have some american tackle single foot fly guides, just wrapped one on, size 10, the wrap just looks way too long compared to the stripper, checked them against some fuji fly guides and they are about 1/8 longer. Should be ok to cut these as long as i use a locking wrap right? Thanks John

Probably. Just do a nice job reshaping them on the ends. Don't go too short, but keep an eye on what's needed and what's not.

Be careful in grinding those guides. Take special notice and you will see that the bend to vertical for the ring is past the point on the foot where the spade foot shape ends. To keep the thread from gapping on you near the end of the wrap you will need to remove some material from the sides of the foot. This particular guide has only one bend to get the ring to the vertical. Other guides have two 45 degree bends and the ring sits a little higher. I agree with you that this guide is too long and needs to be shortened - go slow and be careful and they will come out fine. Take one of the new ones and wrap it with A thread on a test blank and you will see how the thread will separate near the end if you do not grind off the side of the spade area.

These guides are worth the trouble to fix.
