I just put my last application of flex coat on my wraps, I did three thin coats. After the second coat everything looked real good, now after my third coat on my two longest wraps the finish looks pretty wavy. I know its supposed to be self leveling but it looks like it might need some help this time. Any advice? Thanks, Shane Re: flex coat help

Maybe you didn't put enough on or you touched it after it started setting up. Let it cure and do another coat or sand it smooth after it cures and coat agin. Flex coat sets up pretty fast.ED.. Re: flex coat help

If it was smooth after 2nd coat, it should be the same after 3rd unless you put it on to heavy or the rod wasn't level. I would suspect too much finish. Mike Re: flex coat help

If it's wavy, I'd agree with Mike; probably a bit too much finish. To get it smooth, you'll probably have to sand it smooth and re-coat. Mask off the blank around the two wraps so that you don't scuff it up. Putter Re: flex coat help

Thanks for your help guys. As a side note for all the new rod builders like me, Dont skip the warming your flex coat to thin it step, it definetely helps it to self level. Thanks again, Shane Re: flex coat help

Shane , a little heat after it's applied will help it flow better ( I use a small butane tourch ) and will give it some leveling help . If you heat before it's mixed and applied this will make the set up time shorter , somtimes for me , too short . I've found if the epoxy is cold and thick , I nuke it for a couple seconds , but I don't get as far on the guides as I would have if it was a bit warmer before , and I didn't have to nuke it . Just my experience with it , Flex Coat is a very forgiving finish , atleast for me . JD Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
