While surfing I came on a site that featured a lot of different variations on the split reel seat and grip.It looks like an interesting idea, and has to increase feel.IMO What are the pros and cons of this style?.Will the rod be weaker around the seat area? I wouldn't think weight would be a consideration, would it?.Sure does look different. Thanks Ken Blevins So many questions, so little time Re: split reel seat & rear grip

I use the split grip on most of my grips and love them. The weight savings is minimal but I really like the looks. I wrap or marble and put Logo in the split area. Not familiar with the split seat though. What is the address of that site??. On spinning rods, I generally use very small or no foregrip. Instead building an epoxy "ramp" up the seat. This way, when I am holing the rod, my thumb (or finger) is reasting on the blank itself Mike Re: split reel seat & rear grip

I believe those are from George Roth a rod builder in the Rich Forhan vein. The Forhan Revolver Rods have spawned a lot of split grip and funky reel seat versions. I don't believe such a seat will cause the rod to break in that area. Nothing is being done to weaken the blank and seats are not used to strengthen a blank. Re: split reel seat & rear grip

Ken, As I mentioned below in another thread I too use split grips on my rods, mainly because I think they look cool. I have built a rod with a split seat as well, more in the Brad Tharp style than Georges, but very similar. Personally I think the split seat is great for worms, jigs, etc. because you do get more fingers on the blank, and I feel that i have a little more sensitivity that way. However, I dont personally like it for moving baits, it just doesnt feel as comfortable in my hand they way I palm my reel. Again, that is just my preference, but others like split seats on everything. As for breakage, I believe there was a post on [www.wmi.org] A little while back about breakage. I think the gist was that there was the potential for the blank to break at the split, but it took much much more force than you could possibly apply while fishing. But, dont take my word for it, go over there and ask or search, you will get an anser. By the way George Roth frequents that board. Scott Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
