Hi All I am building another fly rod but have hit a wee snag in that if i were to fit the reel seat at the end of the blank as you would normally ,i end up with the butt section of the rod 21/2inches longer than the other sections .The answer would be to shorten the blank so that when the real seat with the permanently fitted extension handle is in place it becomes the same length as the other sections but just do not know if this is okay to do or not.. Any advice anybody good give is as always greatly apreciated. Thanks in advance.. Bry Re: Handle length and extension handles

There is no "Rule" that says all sections have to be the same length, in fact, there are surf rod blanks that have that have a butt section that is several feet shorter than the tip section. Jesse Re: Handle length and extension handles

surely you can use as is but if you would wish to trim 2 1/2" off the butt i doubt that anybody could tell the differance. one reason i would trim it would be to make it fit a rod tube. Re: Handle length and extension handles

I wouldn't cut the butt to where it's the exact length unless like Mike said it needs it he fit the rod tube. Having it just a little longer will help protect your rod tip if this rod will travel a lot. Many anglers I know shorten the tips of their rods slightly to get this same protection on a store bought rods that go to remote locations if the butt isn't a little longer.
