I want to extend two spinning rod blanks by about 6 inches. What are some possible types of extension material? Can I use a piece of wooden dowel, secure it with rod bond, and coat it with some epoxy before applying the grip? Thanks for any advice, Tim Re: Rod Extension Material

NO! Use a piece of aluminum tube or a scrap piece of thick wall rod blank. Go OVER the existing blank. Read the article on how to extend blanks in last year's Rodmaker issue. On lighter bass rods you might get by with an inside sleeve, but on real rods you'll want to go over the existing blank and you'll need something stronger than a wooden stick. Tim I have extended many rod blanks and finished rods...I use pieces of blanks that are just undersized so that I can run a nylon cord [appx. 1/16"] loosely up the blank piece to cause dams when I apply the epoxy. I leave about a 1/8" space between the nylon cord..Tom had a great article on this. Fred Re: Rod Extension Material

Some of the long time builders will probably disagree with me on this. I've extended three or four 6 and 7 ft spinning rods just the way you mentioned, with a piece of wooden dowel carefully tapered to fit inside the blank to a length equal to the length I am extending it. I filed a spiral around the length of the dowel that fit inside the blank for the epoxy to flow into. The handle and reel seat were assembled over the length of the extension and above it, adding, what seems to me, extra strength to the extension. The rods have worked well for me without any problems. I use them with my downriggers which also adds additional strain th the handle when mounted in the rod holders. I don't know if this method would work on a heavier rod, but seems to work fine on my rods. Murf Re: Rod Extension Material

Tim- If you can get it, Todd Vivian at Lamiglas has been making some 15 mm OD tubing that I have gotten through Custom Tackle. It makes an excellent extension material - very strong, very light, and very senstive. (Good looking, too.) The down side is that it has been a bit hard to come by but to me is worth the wait.
