Forhan Locking Wrap

I 'm relatively new to rod building, six rods built and a dozen repaired and new reader to this board. I saw a reference to the Forhan Locking Wrap and was intrigued enough to order the back issue of Rod Maker Magazine where Rich describes his procedure. The method makes a lot of sense for securing the single foot guide and I need a little practice to master it. What was equally important was Rich's description of the Blocking Wrap which is an additional technique in more firmly securing single foot guides. In all the books (except Tom's) and articles I have read on rod building I have not seen this method mentoned.

Thanks to Tom and Rich for bringing another process which will improve our rod building skills.

Tom and the other guys who write the articles for Rodmaker have helped usher in a whole new era in rod building. This board is doing the same thing. Never before have we had this quality of information available at a moment's notice. It's a great time to be a rod builder!

Ray, I have been building rods for many years and never thought that I would have problems with the way I wrapped single foot guides until a year ago. While fishing with one of my friends who was using a rod I had made for him the inevitable happened. My friend set the hook on a large redfish and one of the guides came off the rod. From now on all of my one legged guides will have the Forhan wrap. I am building an eight foot rod for myself and it will have the Robert's wrap and Forhan wrap. During cast testing it performed better than I had expected. Mind you, I saw the Robert's or spiral wrap over 20 years ago but the guys that post here finally convinced me to try this wrap. I learned my lesson when a fishing buddy put me on a large school of redfish and my light rod showed a tendency to twist or torque during the fight. Read every post on this board and you will be surprised how much you can learn for free.

My next rod will be a seven foot baitcaster built on a Legend Elite spinning blank using a spiral wrap following the procedures outlined in Rod Maker Magazine by Mr. O'Quinn, not sure if I would have recognized the special nuances without reading those articles. Also, thanks again to Dan Corbett for recommending the blank and to all contibuting experts' wisdom and ideas.
