Turning Deer Antlers

A friend gave me a box of deer antlers and I would like to try turning one on the lathe as a foregrip or reel seat. Two questions:
Are the centers strong enough to turn after drilling a hole for the head and tail stock, or do I need to drill through and use a mandrel?
Will it need a finish, or is a high speed polish the way to go?
Any experienced responses would be appreciated.

Les Freiborg, (Inserts by Les) on the left hand margin turns antlers very sucessfully. An email to him may help you find answers .

I turn deer horn for pens and you may need to put epoxy in the horn to strenghen the pith...or after you drill it, you can put super glue the thick kind in it and then mount it...If you get the chance use carribou horn... no pith..and turns like ivory.. yon really dont need a finish per se...a little super glue as you turn it makes a great finish...just polish after..put the glue on some batting held by hemostat
