guides and placement

working on my first rod, for trolling 7' with a penn 320 GTI reel, everything I have read so far seems to indicate a 12 guide for the first one, the line wants to rub inside the ring, when I try to figure location, if I move it up to stop the rub and keep line in straight line its too far up rod, Should I go with larger ring or does it rubbing a little matter,
I know it can't go further up, any suggestions

Little rubbing is okay but I think you can go to a bigger guide on a rod of that size. I'm not an expert on saltwater rods but I've used #16s on larger bass rods so a #16 or #20 casting guide wouldn't seem out of place to me on a 7' trolling rod with that size reel.

I would suggest a 20 stripping guide for a saltwater rod like you suggest. On heavier offshore stuff I would even step up to a 25 ring. The 20 should help your excessive rubbing problems. Jay

Jim,

As the rod moves up and down or bounces while trolling, the line will rub against the butt guide and the tiptop. This action might cause heat to be be generated at those points and possibly weaken your line. You might think about using a roller guide for the tiptop and stripping guide (butt guide). This a little more expensive but seems to work very well. Guide placement for the inbetween guides will go a little easier for you. Just a thought
