Single Foot Fly Guides

I build mostly fly rods and have started using predominatly single foot guides. At first this was due to less wrapping, but now I tend to like the look of the single foot guides over the double foot. I have seen several post about a locking rap on the single foot guides. Should I be using a locking wrap on the guides to help keep them stable?

I would also like some advice about single foot fly guides with ring incerts. What type do most of you use, and is there a conversion for the guide size from snake to single foot.

Thanks in advance, Klinkerone

Most builders will recommend a locking wrap of some sort, at least a few wraps in fron of the guide foot. I don't know if it really helps or if it's neccessary but it's not hard to do, expensive, or time consuming. I geuss it's better to use a minute or two of your time and a few inches of thread now than to risk a problem in the future.

I always use some sort of security wrap just to keep the guides from being loosened. This doesn't happen on its own but usually when fishermen use the guides as levers to dis-joint their rods.

I use the Fuji alconite and sic versions almost entirely.

If you're using single foot wire guides, the Forhan locking wrap won't exactly work because the wire guides are shaped differently than the ceramics. Do a search for Locking Wrap. I posted what I came up with as a modification for single wire guides a several weeks ago. It worked well for me. If you use single foot ceramic guides, just follow the directions for the Forhan locking wrap.

I just built a 7' 9'' 3 wt using the single foot wire guides and tried the Foran lock and had no problems with it. I plan to use it on all the single foot wire guides from now on just to know that the guides are secure. I did use 2 lock wraps instead of 3.
