can anyone send me or direct me to a pic of a checkerboard grip? also, I'm going to make an alternating cork-burl grip. would it be better to ream each piece or glue all pieces together and then ream entire handle? thanks to all! I have gotten a lot of help from this board in the last week or two!!!

You can do it either way. I make mine on mandrels and bore them to about the right size to the fit the rod to begin with and then choose the same size mandrel. I keep about 5 mandrel sizes on my bench. After I turn the grip in a wood lathe then I only have to ream a very small amount to get the final fit right. If you have a lathe that can handle an entire rod you can just build the grip right there on the blank and turn from there.
