Rod Blank Suggestions?

My younger brother usually fishes off the back of the boat. He refuses to learn how to pitch instead he uses a sidearm or overhead cast. We usually troll within 20 to 30 feet of bank and cast into laydowns/rocks and such. Fishing for Bass in Tennessee. He mostly throws crankbaits and spinners maybe 1/2oz max. The question - what rod blank would you suggest for a short cast with the best accuracy possible using a sidearm or overhead delivery over 30 feet. This is family so cost is definately not of concern. Re: Rod Blank Suggestions?

For accuracy, go with a casting blank. It gives the best control to abort a bad cast around the laydowns. For the crankbaits and spinners, go with a medium action. With short lines, the softer action will allow the blank to absorb the fish's runs. Rod length is your choice but 6' to 6'6" will give better control. With the short casts, I don't see you needing a 7'. St. Croix blanks in SC III is my favorite. Go with a two handed handle, no pistol grips. Much better control. Just my opinion....Kevin Re: Rod Blank Suggestions?

I built a 7' SCIII crankbait rod, and it works very well. I also just built a 6'6" SCII spinning rod on a crankbait blank. Both perform admirably. I don't think you can go wrong with a St. Croix blank, and 6'6" should work fine. I fish off the back of the boat when I go with my bass buddy, so I throw a lot of sidearm. But if I throw overhand, I prefer the spinning rod. Re: Rod Blank Suggestions?

I too prefer a typical straight grip, rather than a pistol grip. However, for these sort of conditions, make it a relatively short grip, so that your brother can do the sidearm casts easier. I would vote for a 6' or 6'6" M or MH action, depending on the sz. line and baits you're throwing. For anything under 1/2 oz., the M would likely be best. For anything above that, I might go with MH. Check out the line/lure wt. ratings on the blanks you're considering. I'm a big fan of the St. Croix SCIII. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
