SURF GRIPS: STRIKING A NEW CORD

CORD FLOCKING? CORD STRIPING? TAPE BARBER-POLES?

Just wondering if anyone has tried:
- Flocking a cord-wrap grip on a surf rod?
- Using 2 or 3 different color cords for grips?
- Using 2 different color tapes for wraps, like a barber-shop pole or
the paint-job on some lighthouses? (Tape width & rod blank diameter
affect the angle of the spiral, if there is no overlap of the tape edges,
as may be preferred for thicker tapes.)

Putter & Mike Barkley, et al: I'll leave marbleizing over cord
to you pros. - Cliff Hall, Gainesville, FL.

Everything you mention has been done. You don't need to flock your cord, you can just flock the blank itself. Doc Ski shows how to use two different colored cords in his video on rod building.

But there's never anything wrong with re-inventing the wheel. You just might come up with a new twist on an older technique.

Thanks, Tom, for the review and the encouragement. My SEARCH (= Flock ; = Cord) didn't turn up any Messages specifically on flocking cord, or really even much of anything on cord. And I don't have any of the rod building videos, yet. ... But Christmas is coming, ... -Cliff Hall-.

You can also use cord in various wraps (diamond, etc.) under some heat shrink tubing for an interesting effect that offers a great non-slip grip as well.

In the past I've used dyed nylon 1/8" cord for grips, finished with a turk's head knot above and below the reel seat, then finished with a coat of rod finish. The color possibilites are endless.

I'm sure this has been done before by others too.

Lou,

Where do you get your cord and what kind of colors are you able to find?

Thanks,

Jeff
