I am building a 6 1/2' med. light spinning rod so I taped on the guides, put the reel on with 6 lb. test and tied a 1/4 oz. weight on. I started with 7 guides and worked down to 6 guides and also reduced the size of the butt guide from a 30 to a 25 with no decrease in distance. I could get rid of one more guide but I like the way it looks when I stress test it. My guide arrangement is now pretty close to some of the charts I have seen. I kept on testing by moving the butt guide an inch at time in each direction to see if I could get an increase in distance. Never did see any change in distance until I moved it a lot and then I got a decrease in distance. I got to thinking that my casting technique or a little puff of wind were making more of a difference in the distance than moving the guide a inch at a time. Am I doing this right? Sounds like you did everything correctly, If you have enough guides to provide adequate stress distribution and have been able to whittle them down a bit in size with no loss in distance, you should be on the money. ....................... Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
