Reel Seat ‘O’ Rings

Some reel seat locking rings come with integrated rubber ‘O’ rings, and will not work without them. Such an ‘O’ ring failed on me last August when I was on a Dorado trip in Baja. I had spares with me, but I now wonder whether or not the ‘O’ rings truly help keep the reel secure, and whether or not integrated ‘O’ rings are a good idea.

Dan,

I am not sure that the reel seats "will not work without them." I think the idea is to allow a secure hold without permanently locking the rings. The O rings allow the lock rings to hold but still allow removal of the reel without pliers!

On the particular seat I used, the ring is recessed to accommodate the ring. Without the ring, only a thin edge of the ring contacts the sliding hood. I should have made that clearer.
