Without a the aid of a power wrapper or dryer, what is the best finish to use? I know that many of you use hi build epoxies, but will that level well if you are hand turning the rod? I am thinking that I will need to use something thinner like LS Supreme. Thanks. Ryan Re: Epoxy finish for hand wrapping?

Yes, they will level without a dryer. Did it for a few years that way: some still do with LS Supreme high build. Putter Re: Epoxy finish for hand wrapping?

Ryan. Klass Kote epoxy paint. Goes on like varnish. Hand turn for about 30 minutes. Re: Epoxy finish for hand wrapping?

I've never used a dryer or rotator on my custom rods. You'll do better hand drying with a thicker finish such as Flex Coat, LS High Build, Glass Coat, Amtak, AftCote or the Pac Bay finish. These don't require turning quite as often as the thinner finishes will. Put your guides either straight up, or straight down. Always spin the rod a full 180 degrees. And keep this up for at least 2 hours, if not a bit longer. Many a rod finish job has been ruined because the builder thought the finish was fully set and he didn't stick around to give it one last turn. .............. Re: Epoxy finish for hand wrapping?

I turn by hand till it stops saging then put it on the dryer to babysit the rest of the curing process. Re: Epoxy finish for hand wrapping?

I have a rod dryer but hardly ever use it. I turn by hand about the same as Tom. I use Flex Coat Hi Build and turn the rod 180 degrees about every 10 minutes for about an hour and a half. I do not put the finish on thick and never had any trouble with sagging finish in over 20 years of rod building. Tim Re: Epoxy finish for hand wrapping?

Over last 3 or 4 rods I built I also have stopped using drying motor and now do it by hand. I'm very pleased with the results. Pavel Re: Epoxy finish for hand wrapping?

I just recently switched to turning by hand. I was using a drying motor for the first few rods I built to apply and dry the finish and was dissapointed in the uneveness I was getting with LS supreme. From reading posts on here I determined that the problem was with me not the finish. I thought I just needed to get a steadier hand, but I noticed one day when my dryer was tied up that my finish looked better on the rod I did by hand. So lately I have been doing all of my epoxy work turning the rod by hand to apply and dry. After about 30 min. I have been moving it to the dryer. Since I have been doing it this was my epoxy has looked much better and more level. Scott Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
