Pretty new to rodbuilding and was wondering are Snakes Or S.F.'s better than eachother and if so, in what ways, also what has everybody found to be better.

Single foot ceramics offer advantages at almost every turn. They also cost more. Are they worth it? Depends on what you are after.

Both will work. Ceramics, if that is what you are talking about, are harder, slicker, longer lasting, keep the line off the blank and will never wear or groove so they are pretty much a lifetime guide.

As noted above, they also cost more. Depending on the brand and type, sometimes a WHOLE lot more!

There is a large difference in the snakes and the ceramic single footed guides. With the ceramics, do not however, expect to gain a significant increase in casting distance. You stand to gain some, but not the extra 30 feet which I have heard reported. They do offer a host of other advantages though, and thus I have not used a snake guide in almost 20 years now.

With the advent of the Fuji Alconite fly rod guides, snakes guides have been dealt a blow to perhaps their only advantage - price.

Do not think that if you build a rod with snake guides that it is going to be a poor performer. Just as some still build spinning and casting rods with SS wire guides, it'll work just as well as it ever did although there may be a few drawbacks compared to more modern guide types and materials.
