Larry,

Robert Veneeri , Golden witch and REC components all sell turning stock in many species of woods. Im sure there are others as well. You can get stableized stock from the three vendors I mentioned.

Happy wrapps "John"

Go to your favorite magazine stand and pick up a woodworking magazine and browse the ads. Jot down an address or two. Many have email these days. If you have a friend that does wood work ask them for the scraps....they should be big enough for reel seats

The trouble with pen blanks is that they're a little narrow for rod handles, unless you're doing a very thin fly rod. Eisenbrand is good - I saw Tom K. mention them here, and much to my surprise, I found they were located only a mile or so from where I work! The most cost effective (and fun) thing is to buy a 30 pound box of assorted pieces. The "grab-bag" of assorted high end exotics is only $39. You get a lot of cool stuff - only thing is that, unless you know a lot about wood, you won't know what piece you're using - but it's fun to turn it and see what comes out. The smallest pieces are quite suitable for handle inserts and there are many larger pieces that can be cut or used for something else. There is also an assorted rosewood box for $59 and an ebony box for $77.
