Having just ordered a lathe to start turning my own grips could some one give me some advice on about what is the best speed for for shaping cork and also for cutting thin slices of cork and burl cork. Thanks for the info and everything else I learn from this site! Bob Bogard Re: turning cork

1500 RPM is about all you need. There was a great 2 part article in some past Rodmaker issues on turning cork. I don't remember what speed they said to use but I have used 1500 for a long time and it seems to work well. Re: turning cork

I also devoted a chapter in "Rod Building Guide" to the building and turning of cork grips. 1200 to 2000 RPM is the range you need to be in. Any slower and you'll tear rather than cut the cork (although it can still be done and give acceptable results) and any faster is really not necessary. ........................... Re: turning cork

I use sandpaper, but many have found certain files that work good for the first shaping. I really like the 3M "self clean" or something like that. On the package it will say something about not clogging. I use 60 grit and take it to just over the size and shape I want, then use 220 to get it just about where I want it and then 400 to finish. I can see where a file of sorts would work better than the 60 grit, but haven't gotten around to trying out different ones. Elrod Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
