Pre-formed grip repair
Posted by: Alan Gasior (---.totalonline.cz)

I removed too much cork from the tip ring of my pre-formed grip. Fortunately I am able to replace the ring with a spare one. How to remove the glued ring? Let the grip rotate on a drill and cut it with a string?
I would like to follow the line of splice as close as possible. I use water resistant wood glue, not epoxy.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Alan

I don't think a string or thread will cut your cork as it will EVA or Hypalon.

If the grip is not yet mounted on your rod, I would use a very fine toothed saw to cut it while it is spinning on the lathe. Then true the face of the grip with a sanding block and glue a new ring on.

You can purchase a saw like Tom mentioned at many hobbies shops. It's called a Zona Saw, and I've used them for many years in another craft. Here's a link to a picture of one -- [www2.towerhobbies.com]

They come in various blade widths and they have a hard, thick metal backbone. Be sure to get one wide enough to cut at least half way through your grip material. An interestng thing is that they cut on the pull, not the push. X-Acto makes a similiar saw, but it is NOT of the same quality as the Zona. Hope this helps - Jim

You can also turn grip and use a exacto knife to cut it.. The grip has to turn straight.. Next thing you can do is turn the tip of grip to match the taper of blank then wrap the tip of grip with thread.. This look neat done that way.. Thanks Dave's Rods

Stranded fishing wire will cut it nicely. For cork and foam, I use 40# test.
