Do any of you guys out there use the Toastmaster hobby lathe that was popular a few years ago? I have an old one and wonder what modifications would be needed to turn grips.

I have never heard of that one. As long as you can chuck a mandrel on the headstock end and have some means of holding the other in the tailstock, you can do it. If the tailstock has a live or dead center, then mandrel can be drilled 60 degrees counterbore to hold the center. If you put a jacobs chuck in the tailstock morse taper, you can hold the mandrel without needing a counterbore in the end of it.
