mixing rod bond

Hi, I used U40 Rod Bond this past weekend for the first time and so far I'm very happy. There was hardly any clean up, compared to epoxie, and so much easier to work with. But I think I really lucked out measuring equal amounts to mix. The left over seems to have cured nicely. Does anybody have any suggestions for measuring up equal amounts of goop like that. Tnx, Jimmy Nick

I use stainless measuring spoons and a popcicle stick. I just dip the spoon in and then scrap off level with the popsicle stick. Wipe off spoon with a paper towel and dip in the other part.

Jimmy,
It might interest you this topic was discussed recently and in fair depth by Ralph O'Quinn about the margin of error.
Basically, there is a fair amount of leeway in sizing up the two parts by eye, but this should not be taken as taking shortcuts with the more accurate measurements required of a two part epoxy finish.

Check the archives, I think it was about a week ago or so this topic was mentioned with very good input.

It is always better to be acuarte when measureing any thing even when you have lets say a 2% to 4% leway. There are at times when you have fugged on measureing over the years and nothing has gone wrong. Then on this one occasion every thing goes bad. Best excample I can give is in finishes. a little too much resin and the finish starts to set up befor you get started, or a little too much hardner and the finish well never well set up.

Rod Bond is very forgiving by Ralph's account, by 20% error. This in fact surprised me also, but Ralph explained well about his product which there is no reason to doubt.
I do agree, it's good practice to measure anything that needs ingredients measure is better to be accurate than to approximate too much. Those with experience may catch on to the 'eyeball' method and be within a 2% error rate, but for anyone just in the early stages of rodbuilding might be well advised to follow the 1:1 ratio for the stuff to set up with good consistency.

Jimmy
I am sort of a nut when it comes to mixing epoxies. I realize that Rod Bond was formulated by Ralph to allow a reasonably wide lattitude on the mix ratio but I just want more consistency than MY "eyeball" will give. A simple way to be sure that you always get a 50/50 mix is to get some syringes and load one with the hardner and the other with the epoxy. The it becomes very easy to measure a fixed amount on each portion.
My 2 cents.
