Finishing Motot Speed

I wrapped a 13' All Star Graphite Heavy blank. It has a D underwrap with 2 D overwraps. I am using Classic Rod Finish and plan to apply 3 thin coats. What speed motor should I look to pick? Or if I get a variable speed motor what speed should I set it at?

The rod itself will be used for Hawaii style slide baiting for trevally.

Thanks in advance for all you help,

Allan

We are finding that the thinner the viscosity of the finish, the higher RPM finishing speed should be. (Some guys are using 40 RPM and higher and claiming great results.)

There are some drawbacks however. Rotate too fast and the thinner finishes will be thrown up the guide legs. To slow and it will not support enough finish to do the job with just 2 or 3 applications (runs and sags).

You may have to do some experimentation. I'd start with an 18 RPM for thinner finishes and adjust accordingly. On the thicker varieties (I am not very familar with the Classic Coat) I'd try the 6 RPM and adjust from there.

Allan,

I have a 4.8 RPM motor, a 16 RPM motor, and a 40 RPM motor.

I use the 16 RPM motor the most, both for Flex coat hi-build and the thinner Flex Coat Lite. It has really been great.

And I REALLY like the finish the "lite" version achieves, although it takes a little more work.

Wishing you a very nice finished product!
