I have purchased some CFX foam core material for spinning rod split grips . These will be for light spinning rods . My objective with the foam grip is simple I want to see if I like it better than the cork I have been using . For the sake of simplicity I would like to paint rather than use a carbon fiber sleeve. My questions are directed towards those who have painted foam grips before. 1) Are t

I was getting ready to start a new rod and checked my supply of cork rings and found I didn't have any on hand. So, as I have done in the past I went to Mudhole and started checking prices. Am I missing something or are they selling individual rings for around $3 each? That's about $45 for a cork handle. Not sure but I think I can buy the whole handle ready to go for less than that made with

I have a couple of threads where I talk about things that I think are a problem with the spinning version of the XO skeleton grip. Here is a link to a thread where I post some pictures and describe what i think the problems with the grip are. If you're considering purchasing and using one of these grips, you might want to take a look at that thread and then decide on your own, whether or not what

Guy brought me a CTS surf rod that had a failure on the fore grip and rear grip. The material used is some sort of rubber type sleeve that is no longer holding firm to the blank. The rear grip is 24 inches and customer wants it replaced, preferably with carbon fiber. any ideas on getting a 24 inch carbon fiber rear grip and what the material is that was used by CTS. I'm afraid he may have to send

Hello, What do you use as a winding check or trim piece for carbon fiber grips on the side that isn't cut straight and has rough edges and kind of a lip? I stacked two different size rubber winding checks in to each other but I don't really like the look. An example of the grips I am talking about are the CFX carbon fiber ones sold by Mudhole. Thank you Jason

I'm curious if anyone has this blank sitting around or if anyone has built on it that might be able to provide me with a specific measurement? I'd like to know at what point on the blank a measurement of 12.4 mm or .488" occurs. How far from the butt of the blank? I'm trying to find a blank that will fit through one of the NFC XO skeleton spinning grips, and that 12.4 mm is the ID of

I am trying to learn how to turn grips down to specific shapes. I use a Flex Coat lathe with foam core. I made some templates of various grip proflies and measurements and I have various grits of sandpaper to shape the grip. As this is all a hand process, I'm not sure how to make two grips exactly the same. Unfortunately, I don't have a CNC lathe! I'm wondering what others do the ensure thei

I just turn a fly rod grip out of cottonwood rings. It is beautiful, just wondered with the vast knowledge base in the forum, what your experiences were? Weight is about 4.5 gms per 1 1/4” x 1/2” ring compared to 1.5 gms for the same size cork ring. I’m looking for cork alternatives as cork quality declines and prices increase. Just purchased 75 Flor rings trying a new supplier not a clear

I'm starting to make some carbon fiber grips on foam and need laminating epoxy. I was intending to buy the CFX-800 kit from Mudhole but they are sold out. I've seen recommendations on this board and looked for them on-line (West System, Mas, System One, Soller Composites. and PTM&W Aeropoxy PR2032), but they come in large sizes and cost about $100. Can anyone recommend where I might find s

If I were to use the two above links as a rear grip and a foregrip on a build with a Fuji standard reel seat, would the seat sit nice between the two with no visible gaps? I wasn’t sure how grips without tenons would do with those standard reel seats.

I am contemplating my next builds and still in research and planning stages. I'm looking for a torpedo shape carbon graphite fly rod grip similar to the cork one offered by Proof. I have not found any shelf items or a custom house that doesn't have minimum order requirements. - I'll need two, not fifty!. I don't have the means to make my own. Any suggestions?

Which of these three common materials do you prefer for your grips? (Or do you prefer another material altogether?) Do you prefer one over the other for a specific reason or purpose? Mix them up? What's your rationale? I'm using CF more often these days. However, my love-affair with cork has not gone away by any means. To be honest, I've never used EVA because I don't like the feel nor look

Rather than use two layers of cork tape to build up or profile a grip, what is suggested to apply to the blank? Material needs to grip blank well, needs to provide a good substrate to the cork tape, and ideally needs to be thin enough that multiple layers may be used to create specific profiles.

Last weekend was working on a split grip casting rod using some CFX carbon fiber grips. The butt of the blank was pretty good size so when reaming ended up getting into the carbon "skin". However, the inner foam reamed much easier and, before I knew it, when fitting grip I ended up scratching the blank because the carbon skin wasn't as big as the foam inner core. My primary question

I have always applied rod finish over the factory woven graphite grips. Has anyone else had the epoxy go on fine and then put it in the drying box and it develop HUGE bubbles by epoxy standards? This is a first. I have done it this way for awhile and this has never happened before. Thankfully, it sands down pretty good and can apply the urethane still, a few minor imperfections. It did this tw

I don't have any experience with carbon fiber grips. I need to generate a grip of a size not offered, so I'd like to know if they behave the same as cork, EVA, ect. in that you can cut them down without adverse effects. I'm thinking of making two grips out of one piece and creating tenons on the ends. Will this cause the fiber material to fray? I'm pretty confident that the foam core itself won't

Got a question for the builders who use carbon fiber grips. Some of them have a foam core and then others have the hard, layered fiber that normally have a small arbor on each end of the grip, leaving the rest of the grip hollow. Can someone comment on the sensitivity of a hollow carbon grip compared to one of the foam core variety? I'd assume that since the foam core grip makes full contact w

I have built several carbon fiber grips from scratch and used different epoxy coatings to finish the product. I have used spar urethane as a top coat too. I want to make a set of grips out of the foam core alone and I am wondering if there is anything new or better to use to finish the foam core material?

Anyone that are using carbon fiber grips, say from NFC. Do you finish them with epoxy or just leave them raw? If you finish them, what are you using?

Is it just marketing hype? It seems reasonable considering that the same way Point Blank markets their butts to essentially do the same thing. Doing this would then add grips that do what the Point Blank butt is claiming to do - and it seems many if not everyone who has used a point blank thinks very highly of them. Are there grips available with a similar design shape? They claim to u

Looking to build a casting rod and am looking at the carbon fiber grips as something different then cork and EVA. Having never seen or held a carbon fiber grip, I am wondering if they are something that is slippery when its wet and or slimy from fish?seems like it almost looks like plastic in the pictures and plastic would definitely get slippery. Thank you

I have started making a split Tennessee handle using a PacBay graphite color foam arbor. I applied the woven graphite to the arbor material. It appears to be a little harder, more resistance to denting with a finger nail, than the foam in my usual CFX handles that I use. So far, I have not clear coated over the top of this set of grips. I might try using them without the clear coat this time.

Looking at the possibility of using CFX Carbon Fiber grips/butts on my Winter build. Do you need to ream them out to make them fit? If so, how do you ensure they don't unravel? I was looking at the CFX butt, rear grip, and the foregrip for my TVS reel seat with hidden thread. Thanks in advance..

Please help me know what to buy, list what items (or a couple per category) you use. I have no idea what, out of the hundreds of each part, is a "good" or "Quality" product when I'm looking to buy everything I need to for a rod. Practically nothing online has any reviews on any website I look at. I'm sure there is some subjectivity to it all, like any product, but with ZERO

I was told by a representative at NFC to ask here about finding an offset reel seat and grips. He wasn't sure if any of the grips they have are offset, does anybody know any offset reel seat and offset grip? I found the Fuji ECSM reel seat which is slightly offset, but it's not clear if the seat sits low with the trigger higher up closer to the blank - like I'm looking for - or if they mean th

Hey now fellas, I’m fishing as we speak and am using voice to text so bare with me. It’s a peaceful morning (6:10am) where I am. I’m fishing for lake sturgeon. This is for thst walleye build I post about. So I was looking at grips. Basically what I’m wondering is how much of a difference does it genuinely make if I go Fuji or American Tackle. I’m not super picky with reel seats. Does it real
