Well,
My students have there guides positioned on the rods now and are starting to do the wrapping. Next big question for them is what to cover the wraps with. I have been doing some testing with CP, Epoxy and Man O War Varnish on Madiera thread. The results have not been very satisfying. I haven't finished a rod in some time but don't remember having this kind of issues in the past. All th

Just a quick question. Before I get too far down the road, I'm wanting to do a 2 thread wrap on a bass rod I'm working on. I want the result to be subtle. I've done many tigers in the past but only 3 threads. My question is can I do both threads with metallic? Unfortunately, I can't get the color combo I like with normal thread and a metallic. I appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

I know I’ve seen this talked about before but could not find it. Is there any reason I should not use colorfast thread with nylon thread in the same wrap? II want to use color fast white with regular nylon grey. One thing I’ve noticed with the two being same manufacturer and thread size is that the color fast white seems a bit larger in diameter then the grey. Is that just me or is that normal? T

5. Smokey Tiger
So I'm building a rod for a buddy before he goes off to Italy (Navy). He wants a smokey theme to match an all black Penn reel. Any thoughts on how dark I can go with a grey and black and still get the effect? I was also thinking of maybe a metallic black underneath and a solid black on top. Any suggestions are welcome. If you've done any dark tigers, please chime in!
Kinda glad he went wi

Hi,
Got my base down and layered up with epoxy. I need to keep the color of my overwrap thread to match the guide underwraps (Bill, they're already on there and epoxied up...I know I could've gone without, but I like the look). My question is when applying CP, should I do it before or after removing the sacrificial thread? My guess is that you would pull the thread first and CP once the gap

Hey guys, I have seen some awesome tiger wraps but what is missing was the thread colors used. I started making some very small practice wraps. I plan on doing a pink tiger wrap for my wifes surf rod.
The picture is the first base layer with varnish over it. The second is a top layer of black only. It came out like rainbow color?
The base threads are Black Pink and White. I think for the

As I am just starting to build rods I got some old ones to practice wrapping on and just used sewing thread for practice.
The thing is they look really good!Is there any reason that I should buy special thread and are there any downfalls to using normal sewing grade thread?
Thanks in advance Andi

I just completed 4 tiger wraps and the patterns under did not show up very well. When you burnish the bottom, should some of the blank be showing between your S shapes? The underneath does not show through as it should...........any advice, thanks Gene

Looking for thread that matches Auburn Tiger Orange and especially the Blue, going on a matte black blank. Anybody ever done this? I think a regular Gudebrod orange with CP will match the orange but I'm not sure about that color blue. Seems a lot darker than Gudebrod or Fishawk blues.

I am trying my first tiger wrap. I backed way off of the tension on my tread. I am using Red, White, and Blue metalic size A thread for the base wrap. I have burnished the heck out of this, going one way, turning the blank 1/4 turn, and burninshing the other way. I am not seeing the movement that I see in a lot of the other wraps. Am I doing something wrong, or am I just looking to hard for

I just did my third Tiger Wrap, the first one really had a bubble problem, even though I used the alcohol lamp, the second looked like I got the bubbles out, with the alcohol lamp, used a magnifier to make sure they were out, but when the epoxy dried they were these little bubbles all over in the epoxy, then the third one I put a very light coat, then flamed it with the alcohol lamp then put the

Hello, I'm a newbie and think either I've bitten off more than I could chew, or may have just painted myself in a corner. Any help would be really appreciated.
My dilemma is that I'm trying my first tiger wrap, and I'm uncertain about the colors I should use, or if my options need to be tossed before I try it. the 3 basic colors I want to do for the guides and incorporate to some extent in the

I am doing my first tiger wrap, and I wanted to know how using 3 base threads effects the outcome of the wrap. The base colors would be black, white, and gudebrod sunrise, with a royal blue overwrap. The guide wraps are royal blue and sunrise, so I wanted some sunrise color in the tiger wrap. Would I be better off just using black and sunrise in the base, and having a more subtle effect?

When I developed this style wrap a half decade back, I thought a lot of folks would try their hands at it. If they did, I never heard much about it. It didn't seem to really catch on, perhaps due to the difficulty of securing the thread in the desired pattern. Recently I ran the old photo on the cover of the magazine, to give it one more shot in the arm. Today Matthew Smith shot a few photos of h

Hi,
I used some C size (black and white) thread for the base but I am curious to know if any one has used size A thread for overwrap, if so, did it come out ok or should I stick with size C for the overwarp for consistency.
Any help would be appreciated.

This post is in reference to an earlier post I was reading. I didn’t want to Hijack the mans thread and ask a question. The Thread was on the Tiger wrap, You made mention that the poster really should read the article in the Library. You further made mention of the top Thread was the deciding factor in the wraps color. Here is where I’m confused.
First let me say I have read

I am working on my first tiger wrap. For the base layer I used red metallic with black nylon and then covered with 2 coats of TM high build. For the top layer I wrapped with the same black nylon. The color is a little darker than I would like after pulling the "single" sacrifical thread but the holo effect can still be seen.
My question is, if I re-wrap the top layer and use 2 s

25. Tiger wrap woes.
I just finished my first tiger wrap per the instructions in RM. 2 words on this. "Whew" and "Wow". It is one spectacular effect. My problem is the pull out thread. I had to wrap and heat that thing 5 times before I was able to get a consistent gap. And then, it slid on me while I was applying finish. Even with these problems, it still looks pretty nice. I plan on redoi

26. tiger issue
I am having a problem with my tiger wrap. I followed the instructions as far as I know. I used Metallic Red, Copper, and Gold. Not sure if metallic makes a difference. I burnished the base layer very aggressively. Put on 1 layer lite flexcoat and 4 layers high build flexcoat. Then used the Metallic red, starting from the opposite end from the base layer. I removed the 2 sacrificial thread

I'm sure some of you have tried this but I got such good results that I thought I'd post it here. I'm building a simple but elegant black and gold 1" dia surfrod and wanted a gold/black 3d wrap. I did a sample wrap the usual way, black and met gold underneath with a black top wrap with a dummy thread and didn't get good results. It came out dark and the tiger stripes were kinda plain. I did

Not really issues but...I did my first Tiger wrap, I used Gudebrod HT metallic silver and a generic nylon med-dark blue as the base wrap. One good coat of epoxy. The top wrap was done with the same med-blue. I haven't epoxied the top wrap yet,but I notice that the effect is kind of subtle. Will this change once the epoxy goes on? or should I use more contrasting colors?

I have a few questions regarding these wraps. The first one is the simple one. Can you use permagloss as the finish between wraps. The second one is has anyone experimented with more than a 2 color base wrap or 2 layer wrap? I will give examples of what I mean using letters to correspond to colors and numbers correspond to pullout thread.
Example # 1
Base wrap A,B,C,A,B,C,A,B,C
Top wrap D,
