I am curious what the thinnest rod wrapping threads that are commercially available are? I currently use 3/0 silk threads made by a couple different brands (VooDoo Rods and FishHawk). I wonder if there is something thinner that I might experiment with?

92. Too many guides?
I recently finished a NFC 703-1, and I love it! I used a 20-10-5.5 reduction, and ultimately 5 more 5.5 running guides plus the tip top. The blank is 7' long, and so it took 8 guides plus the tip. Not long after I purchased the 703, I decided to try to put one together that was a little heavier, and ended up with a MB 765-1 Neo. This one is 7 1/2 feet long.
I saw no reason not to set

93. CP or no?
What is the feeling about using color preserver on wraps? I had heard it weakened them and would not let the epoxy penetrate.

I'm going to attempt my first build in many many years and I'm trying to get as many ducks in a row as possible before I start ordering components . This build will be a ML power, fast action, 84-86 inch, 13.5-14 inch from butt to front of VSS reel seat hood, used with a Stradic 2500 , 8# braid , and 10-12# FC leader (heavier leader due to use of FG knot) . I plan to use Fuji KLH and KLM for the

Hi all,
Once again I am reaching out for help.
I am building on NF SB683 blank, tip top. 4.5.
Blank O.D. 1.6mm.
I will use 4.5 Fuji TORZITE Titanium T2-KTTG running guides.
Should I use 4.5f- 1.8mm tip top pipe size or 1.6mm will be enough? or should I go with 4F or 5F tip top and 1.8mm or 1.6 mm pipe?
Is there "tip top" general rule you all use?
Thanks.

I was ready to try some ceramics on my next rod but when searching for some tlsg's discovered they are discontinued. I want to keep them as light as possible so wish there was another Ti option. What is everyone going to use? Are the KT's actually much heavier?

Hi everyone,
I'm building a bass/pike/musky casting swimbait rod (NFC SWB-807 1/2-5oz) and planning on using 65lb braid. Built number of rods, but first spiral.
I've read the Simple Spiral article in the Rodmaker SE Guide edition, and searched quite a bit on this forum. Some things/info seem to have changed over time so wondering if the following assumptions are correct:

Hey guys,
I’m wanting to be able to put an iridescent finish on my rod where I put the label. Something that is translucent but reflects in light like oil slick in water. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I made a few observations after I broke three-inches off the tip of my rod on a snag:
1.) In the wind, lighter braid (#2/10 or #4/15 Power Pro) can throw half-hitches into the tip of my rod when I "jiggle-shake" the tip to wiggle out of the rocks.
2.) Fishing in a boat in the wind can leave little time to scream at your buddy to hit reverse on the trolling motor before it is too lat

I've searched quite a few sites looking for spinning guides for a pair of 6'6" rods for top water yellowfin tuna, I need something that can hold up to the 60# braid as well as the rigors of an 80# tuna. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's my dilemma - I purchased a trout spey kit and the bore for both the foregrip and the rear grip is larger than the blank.
The handle bore is about 0.42", the blank is about 0.38" at the bottom of the foregrip and where the top will be is about 0.33."
I've read some of the past threads but had some questions about different approaches.
First approach - use tape arbors.

I was wondering what blades you guys use to cut thread on the ends of your wraps? I've been using utility/box cutter blades that I gave a couple passes on a leather strop loaded with buffing compound. Would double sid d razor blades or X-Acto blades be sharper and/or better to use?

I have read a few threads on reamers. Very few on cementing loose grit on old blank. I tried one this week with not very good results.
I used 5 min epoxy and silicon carbide grit. The heat ended up destroying it. The epoxy was only dried for 2 days. And thinking about it, silicon carbide might have been a bad choice. So I am thinking of aluminum oxide for grit. But, I need a cement tha

Hi Everyone,
What’s is your personal best/knowledge of/build for the most lightweight MH bass rod (7-7’4”) range.
I’ve seen around the 3oz range as a custom build (6’6 or so). (Reel seat, grips, guides, blank)
Sources / links if possible please :-)

105. Cord Wrap
Hello i have several questions regarding cord wraps using the Atwood micro cord material:
1) If I need to shim under the cord wrap to make a thicker handle on the blank is cork tape a suitable shim - will it hold the adhesive (Perma Gloss) used to lock down the cord wrap? What about a thin polyurethane foam core?
2) Does the color change significantly when Perma Gloss or other binding epo

106. Blank Harmonics
As the title implies, I am interested in learning more about the significance of the “tone” an individual blank emits when struck or tapped on its side or dropped on its butt. It is very intriguing to me after learning about it a few months ago here on this site; and it has been mentioned a few times since. Apparently it is nothing new = some responding veterans claim to have been using the proce

Whats the best way to remove those annoying thread burrs that occasionally rise up after the first epoxy application? I do my best to trim the thread and most of the time I can get tthe cut to disappear under the wrap, but sometimes my razor cut just doesn't cut the mustard. I've tried to sand them with an emory and slice them off with a razor.

In a recent topic of mine seeking info of Sabre rods, Russell Brunt replied with an observation / question “There were a lot of great rod blanks from the past. I find it interesting as to which ones were prized the most by time period and area of the country” and “I'd love to hear what were your "go to" blanks from the past and for what waters/fish. Also how you feel they stack up to cu

Is there any evidence that rods built with certain blanks and certain components will cast farther and/or with more accuracy than rods built with other blanks and components? Most serious anglers value performance over appearance, but advertisements for rod blanks and components do not reveal how their products perform. Why not? Maybe they all perform alike!

110. Small Band Idea
I've learned so much reading this board, and through email from helpful members like Phil. I thought I'd share something I came up with today that may work for others.
I've tried a few different ways to hold the guide feet for wrapping. I've tried tape, the guide glue, elastic thread, and dental bands. I like the dental bands the best, but the smallest ones I could get don't hold things very

What guides and ring material do you like to use for mag bass blanks? I got a NFC mag bass HM blank that is going to be used for everything but the kitchen sink. Will Fuji alconite guides downplay the blanks potential too much? Their cost point is pretty low but SIC guides cost 3x as much and this will be a freshwater only rod. Thanks for the input!

While my “removable guide, telescopic rod” (RG Tele) may not be a milestone in rod building history or a trend-setting design, it accomplished its goal of producing a multi-piece pack rod which protected the fragile tip sections within the butt section while still affording PROPER guide placement as per 2-line static load testing for optimum performance; protection AND performance in one rod. 113. Flame on a blank
How much flame can a typical ultra light blank take before it gets damaged?
The reason I am asking is because on the 5 rods I've built i decided to epoxy the tip top on instead of using the tip top glue stick method because I'm concerned I wont get the tip straight and that heating the glue back up to take it off to re-do with an alcohol burner will damage the blank.
Can you actually touch

Hi all,
It's finally here.
We have two models:
10'6" #2 and 10'6" #3.
These will have a softer tip than the stock 10'6" Affinity-X's.
Some might remember that the 11'0" Affinity-X was to be left alone because the tip wassuitable for EN'ing.
They will also depower the tip (-) 1 line weight. But at this time, there is no design for this. The design fee is $204 U.

Hello all, new to rod building here and have a question regarding guide placement and the line angle.
It is my understanding that while doing a static load test by bending the rod to a ninety degree angle that you are supposed to place the guides on a spinning setup so that you minimize the angle of the line between the guide and the blank, trying to keep it as parallel with the rod blank as

I am currently trying to research and find out as much about the process and How to find out how to select the right components for a rod build. I want to build a 6’10’ or close to that length medium light dropshot rod. I have been searching this forum and think I have the guide selection and how to space them figured out. I assume tip top is same size as runner guides for ring diameter. Is there

I'm enclosing a link to these, and while referred to as tubing, They might be better described as very small o-rings on a runner. Does anyone know of a source for these in larger sizes? I'm not looking for orthodontic ligatures that are similar to small rubber bands. Thx, Lynn

Howdy All! How do you figure out which tip top to use? I know they come by ring size and tube size. Do you want the ring size of the tip top to be the same size as the last guide? When repairing a broken tip then you would need a bigger tube size with the same ring size. I would sure appreciate some advice!
Thanks,
Micky

I bought a 14' MHX steelhead centerpin rod a few years back. I would love to build it this winter. I need help on what guides to buy? I want something top end, light, durable, and in some sort of matte finish. (Micro?) Then comes the sizes? I have the spacing after some research but stumped on sizes.
Model number is ST1682
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you Joe
