Funny, I thought about the garnet and thought it might be too Christmas like.
I did a green/black before and while it looked good, I was not as pleased as I thought I would.
Keep the ideas coming. My seat won't be here for a week from REC, so I've got plenty of time to do test wraps on the section that will end up under the grip.
Keep the ideas coming.

122. St Croix SCV Fly rod
Building a fly rod for myself and having some trouble with the thread color choice. It's a St Croix SCV 9'6" 8wt fly rod. The rod has a factory green coating on it that I'm having trouble deciding on main thread wrap colors. Leading contenders are Gudebrod medium brown or Chestnut, and Pro-Wrap Evergreen going with a same color theme.
Has anyone built one of these blanks and been espec

That sounds like a long way but if the static test looks good, you are probably OK. On a light short rod, I'd place it more like 4.25 or even 4. With the greater distance you do increase the load on the terminal section fibers, no way around that.
I'm curious, how many guides total are you using on the rod?

125. Re: MHX decal
I don't know why it works but the first coat of epoxy is essential. Then place the decal, then the second coat of epoxy. It will not require any thing else like color preserver or other treatments. I was sceptical the fist time but the edges will vanish doing it this way. I think that's how Decal Connection suggests doing it as well.

I've used them on a bunch of rods at this point and they are excellent in every way. Definitely my favorites.

There was that guy a few years ago putting up to 17 guides on a 9 foot rod. He claimed it shot the line better.
I did build a couple of 9 foot rods with 11 guides and they are excellent.
I don't have the resources to fully test the idea, and it sounds goofy, but I'd be willing to fish the rod if someone gave it to me.

Computers are not built to last . It's normal. A few do, but the features are added so fast and the processors upgrade so fast, there is no sense building one that lasts 10 years (or even 5). If you are looking for longevity and build quality, get a Toughbook. You will get a very well built dropable laptop for 5X the price of a normal laptop, and the features and processor will

I could see them but you need to look a bit in the sub albums.
Try this link:
Anyway, it's hard to tell in the photos, but it looks like the epoxy was a bit soft still and got some minor abrasion from the cloth of the rod bag. Just put a very light coat over the top and you'll never see it. Then let it harden for a week before putting it in a cloth bag.

Nice video.
I have been reluctant to glue up a full grip, but I'm going to try a fighting butt.

131. Re: SIC VS Alconite
I just built a super high end fly rod for one of my good friends. He is the type that likes the best of everything. Cost is never an object, it has to be the one at the top of the list.
So, I used Fuji Titanium SiC for the strippers and the top. They are beautiful and expensive guides.
For any rod I build for myself, I always use Alconite guides. They are excellent, and I read on here

132. Re: 100yds. pro wrap
I use mostly Pro-Wrap at this point and the spools are like Gudebrod spools. A 100 yard spool will do several rods. What I have started doing, for rods that I build for others, is to include the leftover spool with the rod, so the person getting it has thread for repairs. In the scheme of things, a 100 yard spool is a trivial expense.

133. Re: Custom labels
I used the ones from Decal Connection and they are nicer than the Mudhole decals which I have also used. They are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
I did not find they needed CP or anything else prior to finishing. The important step seemed to be a very thing epoxy coat on the rod blank, then apply the decal, then 1 coat of finish over the decal. You can't see the edges and I thought it came out perfect

134. Re: rods breaking
This is completely hypothetical unless you say who the manufacturer is and what rods were made with them.
If they are not high end blanks, I can't see that repairing them would be worth it.
Breaking near the tip sounds like they have been high sticked. That isn't a defect.

I have built more 8wt rods than any other fly rod. REC#3s will work perfectly as runners. If you were using the snakes than even #2s would work.
For your strippers, consider the Fuji titanium KTWAG guides (size 16,12) and a TFAT top in size 8. This makes for a super nice rod with no corrosion ever in the guide train. The ceramic insert top is superior in every way to a wire tip-top and hig

Mike-welcome. You are likely stressing way too much.
Forget the "guide graph" what ever that is.
Most blanks have a suggested guide spacing from the manufacturer. If that's the case for your blank and it's the first one you've done, I highly recommend you use the factory suggested spacing and build your rod. It will be awesome. When you're new, you don't want to be worrying ab

Masking tape for this job is a thing of the past. It will work, but there are much better tools for the same job. Just because it's been used for decades and does work, doesn't mean there isn't something superior that has made it obsolete. How many of you want to go back to slide rules?
If you consider it, dry wall mesh tape is better than masking tape in every way. It's just as convenient

139. Re: Pro Paste
The regular Pro-Paste (used to be called Pro Bond) seems to be the same product as Rod Bond. I've used both and see no difference. Both are excellent in all respects, and do what epoxy is supposed to do. Regarding the fast set-I used the fast set Rod Bond only once. It seems fine, but since I'm never in a big hurry building rods, I just use the regular stuff most of the time.

ProKote is great and very forgiving. Just stay with it if you are happy with it. 2 coats, and done.
I use either that,or Threadmaster-Lite which I also like.

141. Re: Tip Tops
Another vote for the 5 min epoxy. It works very well, and can be removed easily with the heat and rubber band method described above. Just one less thing to worry about. The only issue with the rubber band method is to not count on finding the tip-top after wards. There are at least 2 in my garage somewhere...

They are welded, but the welds are very fragile and can break when you try to shape the foot with a file. I've learned that lesson a couple of times already. Great guides though.

144. Re: shipping rods
Black ABS pipe is cheap and significantly lighter than PVC. The 2 inch diameter works for fly rods, and most spinning rods will fit in a 3 inch diameter pipe. I mail some of my rods back and forth to Alaska every year and have never had a problem. As I recall, it costs about $25 to send 2 rods in a 3" x 55" ABS tube priority mail. Regular mail would likely be even cheaper.
It's p

145. Re: Short 8 or 9wt
Since there is basically no casting involved, I agree with the idea of using a popping blank. The extra backbone will be welcome and the shorter length will require less strength to fight a fish in the current. Once she get a bit older and stronger, she can just use the 8 wt she has now.
I was eating some of my sockeye just last night and already looking forward to next year!

I understand that the static test is part of the Rodbuilding dogma around here, and for whatever reason, it works. However, I'm building an 8wt Z-Axis, and had a day off from my real job and set up the rod 4 ways with some interesting results.
1-Sage factory spacing. While this works it produces the least desirable line path under load, particularly in the lower half of the rod. It also put

It will work great. You'll want a fast action fly blank for sure. In fact, for those light lures, you could go 8 wt.
I built and took to Alaska this year a 4 piece, fast action 9wt built into a spinning rod and it was great for coho salmon. The lures were a bit heavier than yours but in the ballpark.
Choose your blank carefully, though, because even a fast action fly rod will be a modera

Used on 2 salmon rods with good results. I really don't deal with any ice, so hard to advise. The runners on my rods are 6's.

I've taken on 54 x 3 inch tubes a bunch of times--but always on Alaska Airlines. They are used to it and they understand.
For other carriers, you may have to gate check. That isn't a bad thing, but you have less control.
Funny-I always carry with me to Alaska, and then always mail home at the post office just to not to have to mess with it.
