Saw the "conventional" on second look. 20,16,12.10's to 8's and 7's. Or, forget the 10's and go right to down to the smallest. Static test. Good to go.

Unless you are planning on restoring it, just take them off and replace them with some nice Alps guides from Batson. If it's going to be spinner start with a 25 or 30. Baitcaster go with 20 or 16 down to whatever size will pass any knots you use. Single foot or double foot? You decide baded on how and what you will use the rod for.

Spine?? Accuracy?? Give me a beautiful 8' spinning rod and after 10 casts I'll put the lure within 3 feet of my target every cast. Give me that twisted branch, maybe with leaves still attached, and after ten tries I'll still put that lure within 3' of the target. And if that spinning rod twists under load, I know a sea bird has picked up my bait.

Check with Utmost for the track and thread carriage. They had boxes of them. I know the track sections may have to be drilled for connections but the their cost was stupid cheap.

Batson has some nice 3 piece travel blanks as well.

If you are using that blank as a downrigger, it will be spending most of it's time in a rod holder. I'm not sure that less thread and titanium guides is of any advantage. You won't notice a difference in weight when that 30 pounder cranks the rod to the water nor when you are tugging that fish to the boat with 10-20 oz's of lead. Batson's recipes are generally spot on as far as guide sizes and s

Also an excellent choice for a spiral and not just for giggles. You'll like it.

I don't imagine you will be doing a lot of casting with that RDR. Use a trigger seat if you like but ensure you won't have any problem getting it in or out of the rod holder. As for the singles, use em' if you like, but make sure you use a locking wrap. I know guys that fish 10 use a lot of weight sometimes and that should influence your guide choice.

Mix and apply another batch according to directions. You could just recoat one guide as a test if you have doubts.

Simplest method is the Jim Trelikes rubber cement technique. Thousands of rods being used under all conditions without failure. Ream, boil heat, stretch, spray, dip.....why? Well, if that's how you want to do it, do it. At least look at his method and make your eva installations easy as pie. And give Jim a salute if you end up using it.

Butt end under a butt cap, front end butted to the seat, or, both ends fitted with an inch of shrink wrap, or, shrink wrap and cord wrap, or, a simple thread wrap and finish. Mine use two layers of tape, shrink wrap. You might check Batson's website for a great how-to on the shrink install method to tuck the ends.

If you are considering the Rainshadow blanks, check the Batson Enterprises web site for complete build recipes. And a phone call to them should answer all your questions.

Sorry, for me it's all about sharing. It's why I give credit to the people I have learned techniques from, it's why I teach classes for no cost......don't lose sight of the fact that there are a whole lot of builders sharing info that have never heard of Rodmaker Magazine. It's why there is a library section on this site.

I` m going to take a page from Roger Wilson's playbook and suggest that you wrap a test strip. Do 1" bands of a bunch of colors, two bands of each. Try CP on one, any CP, follow the directions for it`s use, and use just finish on the other. You now have a permanent record to use for future builds. This works well for doing samples ofThroop tiger wraps or Trelikes trim bands. When you hear of

Renzetti....top dollar, arguably best on the market. Forecast from Batson,...great intro, so close to the Pac Bay machine that it's a toss up. Batson's Alps machine with upgraded chuck is rapidly becoming the standard. Custom Power Wrap (CPW) from Anglers Workshop now (I think)old school standby. Great machine. Pick your poison...and your price point.

OK. Back to the original question. U-40 dries rock hard, crystal clear. Not a long pot life and does not like heat. All the Flex coat products are easy to use, fairly hard when dry, have a decent pot life, takes a bit of heat and a great choice for first timers or production users. Pac Bays Rod Smith is close to U-40, maybe a bit more forgiving and stands a bit of heat. Don't know if I can menti

I'm not to sure about the wire and aluminum oxide. Your best bet is to drop Batson's an email and ask. I know the office is closed but Bill is still working from home.

Alps uses zirconium as the insert material, not SIC. If you actually ordered the Turbos, then the insert is al. ox. If the guides are Alps recessed rings then you may have zirc. Can't get SIC from Alps.

Didn't mean to get your dander up Tom. My point of checking your plate of finish in the morning was simply to see if it was hard, clear of bubbles and flat. If it was, then your methods of application are at fault. Just a simple test. Try mixing per directions, apply without " tinkering" and let the finish do it's job. One of the hardest things to learn in this craft is to understand wh

I don't think you will get much sympathy over that story. Try this, mix whatever finish you want, using manufacturer directions, pour it out on a piece of flat tin foil or a plate. And here is the hard part....Leave It Alone. Go to bed. When you get up in the morning, look at your foil or plate. Come back here and tell us what you found.
