UPS came today for the bad blank. The blank company maybe waited to issue the pick up ticket until they received notification that the replacement blank had been delivered. Dan

A quick list please of what solvents to use and NOT to use for specific purposes. I know denatured alcohol for general clean up and for use in alcohol burners. When would I use 91% rubbing alcohol? What others? Thanks. Dan

Thanks for the replies regarding St. Croix blanks. St Croix has a loyal customer base everywhere, but in Wisconsin it's HUGE so it may be worthwhile to pursue a business license at some point. I'll keep an eye on the sites suggested and , I wish I could go to the ICRBE, but have family obligations. Dan

A lot of good buying strategies mentioned in the thread, but what about blanks like St. Croix that do NOT go on sale. What is the approximate wholesale discount available on their blanks? Feel free to email me if you'd prefer not to post numbers. Dan

A damaged blank that had been shipped to me in error has been replaced, but they haven't sent UPS to pick up the old blank. I plan to call the company this week to remind that the blank is still here, and was wondering if they still want it back if I should offer to buy the damaged blank at a "salvage price?" The blank when trimmed past the visable damage will be around 3+ inches sh

Whenever someone asks for suggestions for a 2 piece rod on the fishing boards that I read (bass and walleye forums) the overwhelming response always is "Why would you want a 2 piece rod?" accompanied by "they aren't as sensitive." I have to admit to a bias against 2 piece casting and spinning rods myself, even though I have a 7'6" spinning rod on my "to build list

Tom Have you checked with public or university libraries in your area? They may have the magazines in their archives, or a micro or scanned version of them. Another possibility would be to post a request on a bass fishing oriented board like bassboatcentral, etc. Good luck!

Just got off the phone with the blank company customer service rep, and they are replacing the blank and sending UPS to pick up the old one. He asked if I had looked for a piece of broken tip. I had looked, and had even removed the packing from the other end of the tube and there was nothing there, so it sounds like this was probably missing its tip before it was shipped. The rep also me

Kerry - I agree with you that securing the butt-end of a blank or rod is the best way to ship them. This blank wasn't shipped that way, but the tip was confined within a poly bag with a rubber band and tape, and it didn't appear that had gone through the bag. The PVC tube also had a ball of newspaper on each end and a foam and tape "end cap" so if the tip would have broken in transit

Another good tip Roger! If someone doesn't have a fly vise, similar vises to consider are machinist's pin vises that come in a variety of sizes, with some having flat sided grips that are more comfortable to hang on to and that keep them from rolling around. I've used mine for numerous things including: to hold small awls (.030") small carbide files, and with a small drill bit to

Thanks for the replies. I spoke with a rep with the blank company and he is researching it. So I'm waiting for his return call, and will post the outcome. He seemed alarmed when I told him that the blank was over two inches short, and that model number sticker, and the tip and butt diameters are all correct. It makes you wonder that if they have a large inventory of this blank that ar

Tom, I didn't use the company's name in my post because I didn't want to make an issue of what could just be a "one off" sort of thing, though this doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the quality of this particular blank, and I wonder how close to its correct action it can be. Do you suggest I contact the company, or should I go ahead and build it see how it performs?

I received a new blank today that is at least two inches shorter than its specified length. This is supposed to be a premiere quality, made in the USA blank, and it was purchased from a highly regarded sponsor of this site. It's labeled as being the correct model, and the tip and butt are the proper size, but when I stood the blank next to a rod that is supposed to be 2" shorter than thi

I wonder if a Sharpie paint pen would work? They come in metallic colors and Larry Damore used them to sign rods, etc. on the post below titled "Grade my hand writting" that looked very nice. It would be an easy thing to try and should just wipe off while it's still wet if doesn't work out. Dan

Thanks for the replies. Mike S. I will order a few extra guides in different sizes in case this setup needs fine tuning with this reel and line combo. Tom: I had read the article and was planning to use it for setting up the guide spacing. A question. The article refers to 6 size guides for this weight rod. Does the 4-5" spacing for the running guides still apply for micros down t

Thanks Steve. I'll go with the 25-10-5-4.5XXXXX -4.5 tip combination that you suggested. I live in Wisconsin and part of the time will be using this rod in very cold weather so I am hesitant to go smaller than 4.5's because of icing concerns. Thanks again for your help with this and other questions I've posted. Dan

That sounds interesting, and also makes me think about people in the electronics industry that use ESD (Electo-Static Control) shoes, grounding wrist straps, mats, etc. I wonder if using ESD products would reduce dust problems? Dan

I'll be building a Batson RX8+ 822.5 6'10" rod that will be matched with a Pflueger Supreme 9035XT with approx. a 1.800" dia spool, that will mostly be used with 8lb. mono. Batson's guide size recommendation is: 25, 16, 10, 7, 7, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6TT Does this the following seem reasonable with Fuji Alconites? (Either BYAG, or BKLAG) 25, 16, 10, 7, 6, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5TT Also, a

Tom, I edited my original post to include the following. "...for anyone using Excel to calculate their invoices for sales to "end users" (fishermen) here is a formula to calculate a rod's FET. (THIS FORMULA DOES NOT APPLY FOR SALES TO RE-SELLERS.)" I can write an additional version of the formula "For sales to Re-Sellers" if you like, or maybe it would be

While touching your line for additional feel can be helpful, a finger touching the line to feel a bite has a VERY small contact point. With a sensitive rod, your WHOLE hand is wrapped around the rod handle to feel the bite. Factor in weather, fatigue, distractions, etc. I'd much rather rely on a feeling a bite with light, sensitive rod in my hand than depending on line contact with my fing

I see that @#$%& has some new "Hard Compound EVA" grip material that looks interesting. I was never a fan of the really soft EVA, and was wondering what the impressions are of the harder grips, and is it simply harder or is it more dense and consequently heavier than standard EVA? Dan
