How are you measuring, mixing, applying, and drying the epoxy? Are you adding anything like solvents to it?

I used left over epoxy to seal cracks in my fillet knife handles AND to fill the voids between the blade and the handle so water won't get in the handles to cause them to crack again.
I also used some Rod Bond to replace the beak that was broken on my Mom's cast resin Chickadee. Drilled a hole and Rod Bonded a piece of toothpick in it and then formed the beak shape on the toothpick with Rod B

Rustoleum 2X spray cans come in a LOT of colors - maybe give that a look.
P.S. I don't get the whole "special colored blanks" thing, but I guess I'm not very fashion-minded....

Use a space heater as suggested for wrapping and make a temporary drying box out of cardboard with Christmas tree lights in it.

With the short length rods I would guess these are indoor rods? (You can use somewhat smaller guides for indoor rods that won't be subject to icing like outdoor rods.)
Carbon or glass blanks? (You may want an extra fly guide on very flexible "noodle" glass blanks to spread the load more evenly.)
The style reel also factors into what size stripper guide to use - spinning, in-line

Is there a big difference between the blank size and the ferrule that you have? Measure the two parts and post their sizes.

129. Re: Shorter rods.
I was also thinking a high-vis braid may give you the sensitivity that you're looking for with your existing rods. A Batson Immortal 6'2" XF blank may be a good choice for a new rod using mono.
In my opinion, with moving water sensitivity is only half the answer. An Extra fast tip is key to getting the bait to react quickly enough (especially with mono) to avoid snags with the bow in

The green stain probably has penetrated the blank enough that it won't come out. Maybe try wetting the blank to see what the colors look like with finish on them. You may like what it looks like and can use thread for your wraps that works well with the blank's colors. Good luck!

Assuming that the chuck is tight, the belt ok, etc. and the wrapper doesn't do that if you run it without a rod in it, the wrapper vibrating with the rod in it is from either the grip being out of round or the grip not being centered in the wrapper chuck - kind of like an out of balance tire on a car.
If it's the grip that's out of round you could hand sand the high spot off to get it so tha

Chris - This is a "hockey themed build" so think of the slight eggshell effect from Perma-Gloss as being "Frost Textured."

135. Re: Making a Mandrel
As suggested, hardened mandrels are the best solution especially if you're going to be doing a lot of handles or a very special custom patterned grip.
Otherwise, EVA is very easily shaped and "improvised" mandrels work fine. I have even used a piece of 5/32 steel tubing salvaged out of an old plastic/silk flower stem to shape some small hole diameter ice rod grips- it ran dead tru

Thanks for the replies. I'll use masking tape arbors on these rods and will order some 1/8" hole cork and/or korkalon handles from Janns next time I order from them.
Are there any sources for 1/8" hole EVA?

I'm planning to put EVA Tennessee handles on some ice rods.
The butt ends of the blanks are only about .150"
The smallest ID hole for EVA or cork that is offered by this vendor is .1875.
I'm thinking of using either masking tape arbors or wrapping D sized thread around the blank. They also offer a .250" dia. graphite tube that can be used to fill in the difference between th

Looking forward to your website being completed to learn more about your blanks, etc. Maybe just put up a "simple" site for now and do the full site as time allows...

The Batson RX8 XSB802.75 and XSW68MX are very nice 6'8' MXF blanks. For guides I'd suggest Pac Bay Minima4 guides that many of the top builders on this site use for light weight, reasonably priced guides. Utmost Enterprises has great service and generally offers discounts off MSRP and they can also get the MInima4's for you.

Thanks Roger. I'll pick some up next time I'm by a Michael's.
Michael's and Hobby Lobby also each offer a 40% off one item coupon, or a 20% off your entire order coupon each week in the Sunday paper. Printable coupons are also available on the net. A nice savings for rodbuilding and lure making supplies - I just wish a person didn't have to search through all the "decoratey" stuff

An older Fenwick flipping stik that I have has a 10" overlap. If you're making a lighter use rod it could probably be less.

It sounds like Perma Gloss is light weight, super tough, and non-yellowing as a thread finish. Has anyone used it to clearcoat crankbaits?
Thanks.

St. Croix's site lists weights for bare blanks and factory rods. Pick the rod series that's closest to what you're building it should give you general idea of what you want to know.

I like them for several things.
I have fairly large hands and conventional round grips cause my hands to cramp when jigging spoons, bladebaits, etc. They're also great for short-range, accurate casts with spinnerbaits, etc.
Pick a blank in the 5 1/2 to 6' range with the action and power to match your preferred applications. As with any rod, match the line to blank and the lure to have t

Shimano Cumaras have a lifetime warranty - it might be better for you to suggest to the customer to submit the rod for warranty replacement than for you to get into a messy repair like this.
If he wants to go ahead with the repair I'd make it clear that without the original tip that this is at his own risk and that the repair may not hold.

Flex coat with a bit of tint added to it to match the old finish on the other guides could be worth a try.

Mudhole's SJ9000-MHX MLF has a nice light sensitive tip, plus a ton of backbone from mid-blank to butt, and is reasonably priced.
