If using braid you might want to consider a glass blank. The Lamiglass SR705 rod is an awsome deep cranking and trap blank.

122. Bamboo insight
I have a local guy that has several bamboo fly rods he inherited from his Grandfather. He was fishing with one and another angler basically asked him if he was nuts because they were worth too much and should be on display. This isn't my area of expertise. If anyone here would care to offer their insight or advice send me your contact info and I'll pass it along.
Thanks.

123. Re: alabama rod
I'm finishing up an A-rig rod on an MHX SWB967. Test casting was very encouraging. The blank handled various weights from 1 3/4 up to 4oz with no problem. I have no doubt it could handle even more weight but I didn't see the point for this particular user.

124. Repair stock
Does anyone have suggestions for sourcing blank scraps for repair sleeves and such? My immediate need is a small dia fiberglass over sleeve for a rod tip repair. I'm always looking for broken and cheap garage sale stuff for this but I have nothing right now.

You know, I thought of that too. I've done the "Broken Tip" set up on float rods before, but I've never tried it on a heavier rod.

126. Tip Top suggestions
I'm doing a swimbait rod with 4.5 running guides. The blanks tip a 7.5 and the smallest top I can find to fit has a size 8 ring. Is using that contrary to the mico runners? I found a 5/7 that could be split to fit or a 4.5/6.6 that could be split. I appreciate any opinions.

My experience would lead me to advise against the use of the Hot Sauce lubes, especially the grease. It thickens and gums up over time. Email me if you'd like more detailed advice on maintaining your reels.

128. Re: grease on gears?
I'm a reel tech as well as rod builder and can confirm the sentiment that only a film of grease is needed but be sure the film gets between the teeth and not just on the tips. Parts should be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and old lube prior to application of new lube. Shielded bearing are those with a permanent metal shield. A sealed bearing has a removable rubber seal. Quality lubes used in an appr

I've used REC Recoil guides on winter use float rods with good results. They are light and tough and the ice is knocked off easily when need be. Batson has a few float rod recipes on their site. I can see a small stripper guide working well on a center pin rod since there are no large coils to tame at that point.

130. Refinish vs. Rewrap
Has anyone had any luck refinishing or touching up areas where the epoxy has seperated around the guide neck or is rewrapping the only way to get a decent result?

I just did a float rod on this color blank. Crome Recoils and chestnut thread with no CP. The thread darkened of course but looked really good against the blank, especially out in the sun.

What style and/or model of respirator do you use or recommend? I'm using disposable 3M filter masks but am doing more and more turning and want to be as safe as possible.

I'll be trying some steelhead fishing but not quite ready to commit to the center-pin reel set up. I'm considering a spiral wrapped casting build on a 13' blank as the next best way to present a float rig. Should I just go spinning and maybe buy a pin reel in the future? I'm looking at the xst Batson and the MHX blanks. I've heard the MHX described as on the whippy side. Is there a lot of differe

I'm building a 6'9" ML/F spinning rod for stream smallmouth, 40mm reel spool and braid. I used the 27x and tried to get away with a 16 Minima Match guide as the stripper. The stripper guide currently sits 29" from the reel face. If I palce a size 20 behind it, it falls 18" from the spool face. Is test casting even worth trying without the 20 guide?

For those using glue/cork dust, what general ratio do you use if any?

I use NGC but still static test. That should tell the story whether the setup will do what you want or not. What are you building that will use such a lagre spooled reel?

My Grandfather had a steel telescoping fly rod that was hex shaped, but I didn't know anyone still manufactured rods in this shape. This company claims better sensitivity, casting accuracy, deadlift and durability all due to the shape and the fibers laying straight as opposed to wrapped on a mandrel. How much of these claims do you think is "Fluff"?

139. hex shaped blank?
I came across a site selling rods built on hex shaped blanks: I'm skeptical by nature, but what do you all make of this?

141. Arbor use
Do you find graphite arbors any more sensitive than ones made with mesh tape? When you use graphite arbors do you epoxy the arbor to the seat and then ream and mount or position the arbors and then mount the seat once the arbor has set up?

That sliding reel seat is an awsome idea. I've pondered a compromise between Tennnessee handles and fixed seats but this never occured to me. I'll definetely be implementing this idea for a demo rod.

Thanks for the replies. I knew I'd get good answers here. I don't post a lot but check the site every day. I finally got off my butt and subscribed to Rod Maker Mag.

I have a client that would like a rod that will double as a 7wt fly and light spinning rod. He fishes for bone fish where they cast mostly flys, but occasionally throw shrimp. He doesn't feel that he does enough of each type casting to justify dedicated rods. Is there a compromise set up that will work half way decent for both?

I have a potential customer who wants a 13' steelhead float rod with a little slower action (as opposed to fast) but still enough backbone for fighting fish. Is the Batson Rain Shadow IST1562F a good blank choice? Second, he uses a center-pin reel, what do you suggest for guides and placement? Is there a variation on the New Concept system for this application?
Thanks much,
