It depends on the application. The Hi Mod are a little lighter and make sensitive rods for finesse applications. The standard MHX are not bad blanks either. They're fairly light & pretty crisp.

I've used a forest green nylon w/o CP and it blended pretty well with the St Croix green. Wet the spool with some DNA to see approx. what the finished color will be. I put a carbon fiber tube Tennessee grip on a ML drop shot rod and it worked out really well. A 12" grip on a 7footer should be about right unless you want some fore grip. The Aero seat will take a straight full grip. When you

I don't believe it is either and agree with your reasoning. The

Just ran across this news release.
Will this put Jarden in an unfair competitive situation with the ability to drive up the cost of other brand rods and more importantly blanks? How much of a market share does 3M have in the resin market for blank manufacturers?
Edit: The source that led to this link also claimed 3M had sold exclusive rights to the resin technology to Jarden.

I use a lot of MHX blanks including for my personal builds and find them comparable to other quality blanks regardless of price. I think each company has certain exceptional blanks and it pays to mix and match. I love the Lamiglas glass blanks for cranking for example. St Croix has one of the most robust lines of over the counter rods and sell the blanks as well. If you want to go with all one, M

I don't get too concerned about line touching the blank on a bass rod or other app. where the fish aren't making long hard runs. I use the lightest guide train I can being sure the line doesn't bow below the blank in a deep bend. I use a lot of BLAG and such guides.

99. CTS Blanks?
I'd like to hear from anyone familiar with CTS blanks, especially in lengths and powers suitable for freshwater spinning and casting rods. They have a lot of colors to choose from but how do they compare weight, strength and sensitivity wise?

100. Re: Extending a rod
I would think it depends on the original length, power and action of the rod. If a blank is short and parabolic you probably can't go too far without it bending down into the spliced area. It seems like you could get away with more if the starting place is more like a Hvy/F bass blank. What is it you have in mind?

I think where I have trouble is lighting. My understanding of a photo box is that it helps to create diffused lighting and eliminate glare. My photos tend to be too dark or have a glare on the epoxy on decals, wraps, inscriptions...

There was a thread some time ago with instructions for a box to place rods into for good pics. A search turned up lots but not that particular thread. Any tips for capturing rod builds in good photos are greatly appreciated.

I second the MHX blend blank. I find them to be among the best blanks despite the comparative low cost.

104. Bass Pro rod equiv.
Does any have any insight into what blanks BPS uses? Specifically, I have a customer that wants a rod built with action similar to that of a BPS CXS 46 DR. It's a light trout rod. Thanks.

Thanks guys. That's about where I was at on this but affirmation by you all is always good. Thanks again.

Does lengthening the grip negate any of the added casting distance of a longer rod? (all else being equal)

107. Wood handle source
I need to source a Walnut handle for an Ultra-light trout rod. I have a client that wants one duplicated if possible. The original builder is out of business. If anyone here is interested or can point me in another direction I appreciate it. I'm getting the details but the one he has is about 6" in the back and has a mod wells shape and the fore is about 1.5" with a flat spot on top for

High resistance lures like deep cranks can also cause line stacking by holding the rod to the side during retrieving.

109. Fly Guide Sizing
I'm planning for an 8'6" 5wt fly rod and thinking guide sizes 12, 10, 8, 6 running. Can I get away with anything smaller for ringed running guides? Leaning towards titanium frame guides. I'm not opposed to RECs either I've used them on long float rods.

2-3 outings over a week or so. Supposedly he was fighting a fish (3# bass) heard a cracking noise and then the rod broke. He had landed larger fish the day before according to him.

Thank you, I'll definetely be ordering a back copy. In the meantime, to help with a current situation, is a clean break between guides more like mis-use than defect? The break is between the 3rd and 4th guides on a MH/F graphite blank. This all the info I have right now as the rod is in transit to me for repair/replacement etc.

What clues do you look for in helping to determine why a blank failure occured?

I'm also experimenting with this, mostly for repairs etc. and so far I've had no problems.

From the looks of your equipment I assume you are primarily a bass angler. If I'm track please forgive me. If you want to add technique specific rods you might consider a Frog Rod, a Hvy or X-Hvy Flippin' Stick or a Swimbait/A-Rig Rod. There are a multitude of good blanks for each of these. Once you decide what direction you'll go in you'll get lots of good suggestions.

Phil,
That's the the way I was leaning especially since the existing male end may have been lapped.
Bill,
Thanks for the link, looks like a good resource.

118. Ferrule replacement
A guy brought me a bamboo fly rod that is missing the female piece of a mid section ferrule. Does the other half need to be removed and repalced as a matching set? Can you buy 1/2 a ferrule? This is not an expensive rod but is functional according to the owner. The guide wraps are obviously amateur. Thanks.

The last one I did, I mounted the reel and ran the line thru the tip top and used a cobination of guides to follow the straightest path with least drag. A running guide was tied as a top and final static testing gave final guide number and placement. So far so good.

I've been asked for a 3pc 8ft spinning rod to throw 1/8-1/4oz jigs to bonefish. He has a spinning rod built on a fly blank but feels it is too "whippy". Any suggestions appreciated.
