121. Blank Refinifshing
I am redoing a rod that I built a couple of years ago. I stripped the guides, and in the process, removed some of the original finish from the blank. It is a partial removal at the location of the original guides. The replacement guides will not be in the same location. Is there a good way to restore the finish at the original location of the guides on the blank?

122. Re: St croix blank
Checked the Mudhole/St Croix cross reference list and saw nothing remotely close to that number. May be something older.

Lance, I usually place my stripper guide within easy reach of my free hand. I assume you then place the running guides based on the normal stress test. Correct?

Lance, What number of single foot runners have you found to be the optimum number for a 9 foot rod?

Bought an 8 weight at the show a few years ago. Use it for bonefish. It is a very nice rod and casts very well. It is not as overpowered as some rods, i.e the 8 weight CCS's between and eight and a nine. Also, broke the tip of this rod when I poked a shark in the head when he got too close. Shark went berserk, imagine that, and broke 2-1/2" off the tip. I contacted Rod Geeks and they w

Recently wrapped a rod with the Heitna metallic thread. It seemed to work just like any other thread. It was under tension the whole time so if there were problems as noted above, I didn't notice them.

This is what happens when you have too many adult beverages and start solving the world's problems. LOL
On a serious note, distance counts for me when I am fishing sinking lures and suspending lures and I'm trying to keep them in the strike zone on wide open water.

I was laying out guides for a rod. I started to question the layout? I asked, for what condition is it best to design the rod? I thought of the the following:
1. Casting: What configuration provides the best for distance?
2. Retrieval: A low stress situation that is not considered a determinate.
3. Hookset: I thought this is the most stressful situation but the least used, therefor

Be careful with the 8 wt CTS blank. I bought an 8 wt last year that CCS'd out to a 10-1/2 wt. You may not have what you think you do.

130. Re: Lathe options
Keep an eye on Craig's List. I got a Jet variable speed for about half the cost of new. Agree with the lathe recommendation. You can get into turning wood, acrylic, stabilized wood, etc and the lathe has the power to do it all.

If you are concerned with the bump, fray the remaining thread before you pull it under. This helps to disguise the end.

What do you consider to be the optimum ambient room temperature to apply thread epoxy?

One avenue to consider is to turn your own arbors. Several years ago, I bought a box of scrap sign foam material (30# sign board scraps) from Atlas Signs and Plaques. This material turns really easily, can be reamed very easily, and can be made into any size you need. I checked (on-line) and they still offer the box of material for $10.00 plus shipping. There is more than enough material in t

I saw the list of vendors for the ICRB does not include Rod Geeks. Does anyone know if they plan to be at the show this year?

If you are interested in purchasing, I suggest keeping your eye on Craig's List. It took a while, but I found a very slightly used Jet variable speed for about half the price of new. Works great and very good buy.

I purchased two 4' LED shop lights at Sam's and placed them end to end above my lathe. Works really well.

139. Re: Rod Geek
I have had good experiences with them. I bought an 8wt, 9', 4 piece fly rod blank at the show in February. Used it for Bonefish in the Bahamas. Found it to be as close to an 8 wt as any other blank I've tested. Rod performed very well. I needed a label for a rod I am currently building of theirs and their customer service was excellent. They were willing to send a label asap. I am not a pr

How do you secure your guides to your rod when test casting? I have tried tape, rubber rings, and shrink wrap. In all cases, the guides tend to move while test casting. Is there any other method, other than wrapping without finish, to quickly secure the guides in place?

Don't forget to look at the TFO blanks, especially the BVK. They rank high with the Yellowstone Angler's in their 8 wt shootout.

You could wrap the tip in a bright colored thread and coat it. I have used this for a friend and it works well.

145. Re: Wrapping 101
When I finish the wrap, I hold the wrap and the loop with a finger. I then loosen the main line and cut it, leaving a tag end of about three inches. I put the tag end through the loop, and snug the loop against the end of the wrap, pinching the tag end. I then cut the tag end to a shorter length than the length of wrap that holds the loop. I then pinch the wrap with a fingernail to prevent pu

146. Cabela's E-glass
Gents,
I have a request to build a rod to match a Cabela's E-Glass that is probably 20+ years old. I am trying to find a similar blank. The markings are:
S702MH
Lures 3/8 - 1
Line 6 - ?
K03
This is a two piece blank.
Can anyone suggest a blank that would be comparable?
