17101. Re: ACTION
You didn't offend me. In fact, I agree with you. If people thought they had to study the origins of Daniel Fahrenheit's scale and how he determined his standards in order to use it, they probably wouldn't bother with temperature readings either. I'm going to consider doing such an article. Even with the full page Rosetta Stone chart, I think I can do it in 3 pages, including photos. ......

17102. Re: ACTION
Bobby, Let me address some of your points. The first paragraph, about the "parameters" has nothing to do with the CCS. It contains vague terms that the CCS doesn't use like "XYZ rods should have a parabolic action." So I'm not really sure how that has anything at all to do with the CCS in any way. The CCS only measures power, action and speed, it does not set paramete

Right, there were also articles on how to determine the proper number of guides for any rod, and another full size grip template. A few other things as well. One thing I would like to see, is for the names of the authors, Scott and Bill, associated with these wraps. Instead of referring to the wrap as a "Tiger Wrap," it would be nice to see it referred to as a "Throop Tiger Wrap

I used to use the Loomis "L" series blanks for this. Not sure what else is similar, but it doesn't have to be anything special. I like a faster action. Even a Hot Shot rod can work well for this. What length are you looking at? ............

No, it's in volume 6. Use the link provided on the sponsor page for all the CCS articles. The ERN is the same for all rods, casting, spinning, fly, etc., this is what makes the system relative across the board. It's the same for all rods. If space aliens came down and asked you about our system of measurement, you could tell them about inches and say that the higher the number, the greater th

By the way, if you do get involved with AA and ERN, you'll have a nice surprise in store. Just as Dr. Hanneman mentioned in the articles, the DBI (Defined Bending Index) is really much more helpful than the AA or ERN by themselves. For instance, you give me the ERN of a blank and I have some idea of the power. Give me the AA and I have some idea of the action. Give me the CCF and I can make a de

Are you doing ring inlays, or a pattern in the grip surface? For rings, just coat both surfaces and let dry. Then slide on a mandrel for alignment and jam them together. You really don't need a clamp, just put good pressure on them. ............

Epoxy leaves a hard edge. It will be uncomfortable and doesn't like flex. Not sure why you would use rubber cement for such a thing - it's not going to hold up. The thing to use is Weldwood Contact Cement. On inlay patterns, you'll coat both, perhaps even a couple of times, allowing dry time between each coat. Then go back and coat the pattern back and install while the cement is still wet

On a dial up connection it may take a few minutes since the file is 1.8 mb. On high speed connections it should be loaded in about 15 to 30 seconds. And it's also possible that several dozen people are all downloading the same file at the same time. If you can't get it load at all, wait a bit and try again later. .............

The weight in pennies doesn't really tell you much - frankly I can't imagine that part being very useful (but if it's helpful to you, great) . The weight of those pennies is not supposed to be indicative of the amount of weight a rod will cast or handle. Not at all. I know early on many people thought the weight in pennies was supposed to correspond to the amount of weight the rod was capable of

You might just buff right through the very thin surface coat. You'd want to be very, very careful. Better yet, spot touch with PermaGloss if the nicks are down into and through the current surface. ..........

The Tiger and Holographic wraps which so many have enjoyed these past couple years were introduced to the rod building craft by Scott Throop and Bill Colby in the pages of RodMaker Magazine. The Volume 10 #2 issue, which contained those articles, is nearly sold out at this point. To that end, I have put both articles, in their entirety, in our online library here. These are the complete, in-dept

Could be. I just don't have a clue as to what these "suggested parameters" are and what the builders in question are trying to do with the CCS numbers or why they think the 2 don't match (or do). If someone could provide one of these parameters or a specific scenario it would help me better understand what the supposed problem is. The deflection distance was not intended to mimic tha

It stands up fine, but it's not really what you want for cork. Just not necessary. It's messy (as you probably figured out) requires moisture to set and cure, and really is more trouble than other common cork adhesives like carpenter's glue or 2 part epoxy. But if you like it and have some to use, it will certainly do the job. .............

Bobby, I don't think anybody is trying to get you to "give." Some are able to use it for their purpose and some aren't. As Dr. Hanneman said, "If you find it useful, use it." I use it on everything from fly rods to bass rods to live bait rods and haven't run into any problems. Others don't use it at all. If you don't find it useful for what you're trying to do, so be it.

Per the article we ran a few issues back in RodMaker, take some braided fishing line, grasp between your gloved hands, Lower it to the rod blank just in front of the grip and pull the braid from the front to the back of the grip. Use a bit of a sawing motion and the grip will slice right off the blank. Very little clean up will be required. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Yes I did, that's all covered pretty well in the Big Picture, part II of the CCS. All measurements in such a system have to be taken at a standard position if they're going to relative. Thus the 1/3 distance/deflection. However, the measurements outline in the Big Picture allow you to break things down much further by using the CCS on sections of rod blanks and under different deflections

There is great deal of overkill in guides these days. For most standard applications, you want something as light and as small that will still perform the required job. That's the criteria for size and weight in most instances. Is an SIC ring better than one made from aluminum oxide? Depends on what you're after. Line friction on the cast isn't really much of a factor. You can cast just as

Bobby, I apologize for being dense this morning. I finally figured out what you are saying - some guys are trying to put square pegs into round holes and then want to blame the pegs. Let’s say a given parameter for a certain rod type is this - “A 7’, heavy power, fast action rod.” Already we’ve been given a bum parameter. It contains one objective term and

"Example; there are builders who first measure blanks to get the AA and automatically conclude that the blank is not suitable for the desired purpose because they don't fall within given parameters, when in fact a simple 'build try' trial would have revealed that the blank would have made a rod much superior to the ones that fall within the given parameters." Bill, No one fudges CCS numbers - they are used to provide accurate relative power ratings. Once you know how to relate to those figures, you can do a great deal with them. But again, there are no parameters in the CCS - that type stuff is just in the fisherman's mind. The CCS makes so much sense, but I'm afraid many still don't understand it. And... if it doesn't work for all rod types,
