I like a single layer of electrical friction tape to keep it in place.

What would cause a heavy tuna rod that was built with a bent butt to shear off at the ferrule? This question was asked of me by a angler that was fighting the fish while the rod was inserted into the gunnel of the boat. What kinds of reason would the rod shear off at this location where presumably it is the strongest part of the rod? Can the method of installation of the ferrule be at fault?

Well, then the only alternative is to use a metal ferrule like those sold at Mudhole.

Make a handle with carbon tubing getting eva, reel seat etc and then epoxy the top section to it and make it a one piece rod for an easy fix.

Kencor is no longer in business. It was a company that was based in Gardena California. The owners name was Kenny. Sorry, I only met him a few times long ago and do not remember his last name. He was importing his blanks from Japan and built the rods in his small shop on Rosecrans Avenue in Gardena. The fresh water rods were golden yellow in color. They also had a blank called the zebra sti

I think that the end user is likely to have heard of the spine and would look for it. For this reason, I build my rods on the spine. Easier than having to explain how it does not matter...lol

I use microsol and microset solutions on my water slide decals. Does anyone else use these. Seems to help.

If you are buying from Mudhole, then call them to furnish all your components. Of course you need to tell them the dimensions of your handle but they should be able to do it for you.

The rubber cement only method was used a long time ago. Now it is epoxy. I have taken apart some grips with only rubber cement and it literally peels off the blank very easily without any adhesion. Likely, the culprit of the split was the 1.5X stretch.

It has been suggested to me that to make the job easier to slip that hypalon on is to use rubber contact cement . Apply it to the tool suggested by Ron Weber and use rod bond epoxy on the blank where the hypalon will end up. Make sure that the contact rubber cement fully coats the inside of the grip to facilitate it slipping onto the blank. The rubber cement will not conflict with the bonding

Just a further update to this question. I looked into the Granger suggestion for carbon tubing but found that they are too expensive. Just thought to try that @#$%& site and found some sold from China that were much cheaper so decided to try it. Only thing is the wait time for shipping from China.

First, thank you all for your suggestions. I have completed about 10 rods all using the same blank and components now. I started out with the 1/4" masking tape shims leaving 1/2" gap between each shim and filling the gaps with rod bond. Did not have any failures using this method but I wanted something stronger. I used the dry wall tape next but I did not make shims but instead used

Thank you very much. It just is becoming harder to find just the right size blank to fill the gaps. Then the sanding to fit.
I have tried the dry wall tape but it has too much give until the epoxy dries and have to be careful that the rod is straight
to the butt.

First, here is what I have been doing with installing the ferrule portion onto the blank. I have used various methods including drywall tape to make up the difference between blank diameter and the id of the ferrule.
My latest builds, I have used a piece of blank from another old rod and found one that will fit over the rod blank and can be fitted to the id of the ferrule. I've glued both the

I think you cut your thread with your razor blade.Your blade should not be at that kind of angle and you are cutting into your wraps.

Yes to a certain degee that is true.
Especially for salt water blanks that are now so thin and narrow.
I recently had to remove a reel seat from a jigging rod that had a size 20 reel seat ( fuji ) and it was too small for the large 30 size reel that was to be used on it for live bait fishing. The hoods were too small and the diameter of the reelseat was too small for the reel clamp.

Hbsg fuji is the guide I like. 6 ft bent butt spiral wrap I go with 20, 16, then the rest 12 to a 12 tip.

It will change. Did you use color preserver? If not, the change will be even more pronounced.

I build giant bluefin tuna rods for stand up fishing. I use a short bent butt so I need to trim the 6 ft blank that I use. The blank is parabolic and bends near mid point on the blank. If I just cut from the butt end to make it back to a 6 ft rod, the blank will bend at the mid point. What would happen if I cut a bit off the tip? Will the rod still bend at the same location?

When I have done this using thread to fill the gap, I leave large gaps between the thread so that the adhesive can also adhere to the blank itself and not all onto the thread.

What was the cause of the hazy appearance? First try to see if further curing time will cause the haze to go away. Was the cause high humidity/moisture? Perhaps put it out in the sun to hasten the curing?

If you use the butt that you have and it is .875 I.D. then it would require you to cut the blank from 4' 10" down to where the O.D. of the blank

The aftco unibutt and others made by pac bay, alps all have the same i.d. of .875". The short unibutt is 17.76" long and that added to the 4'10" that you say is the length of the blank would not make it 7 ft but a tad over the 6' that you want. By trimming some off the butt end of the blank should get you close to the 6 ft that you wanted. What is the problem? If cutting off ab

Correct me if I am wrong but you are looking at the remainder of epoxy left in the aluminum can. I think that the thickness of the left over finish will show yellow more so than a thin coat on a rod.
