Think that putting a carbon sleeve direct to the blank would be ok? I have some heavy surf blanks that are almost or are an inch in diameter at the butt ends and I like cork tape on these to keep the diameter as close to the original size as I'm not a fan of fat EVA type handles. I'm guessing it should work just epoxy a sleeve to the blank and thread off of it to finish. I checked the ends on my

Sorry Dave, I meant to send you an E-mail but I think it was locked. Mr. Bartlett is the one to thank. I used this over a brown oil based stain on a old Conolon fiber blank and it's great stuff and so easy to use it takes all the fun out of it, LOL.

It's a hybrid water based poly that won't yellow. It has very low smell and it remineds me of finish sealer for concrete. Dave your E-mail is hidden!!!

The Max Seal is great stuff and no doubt would work! It's a great alt. for PG if you have a painted blank! A member here led me to it and I'm more then happy with the results.

Well, I'm letting it dry for at least a week. I have stained fiberglass doors and such of course a door doesn't flex like a fishing rod but I hear talk of people painting rods with Enamels so.... I figured this would work and it's so thin and kind of sucked into the grains a bit, Meaning if I wanted to strip it I would destroy the rod. We'll find out, It's not some big deal rod that I'm using, in

Being new all I can do are simple straight wraps. I believe it's all practice and confidence! I have no problem with practice, The confidence part is what I'm working for!!

I have two old 11'6 Garcia/Colonon ?? Rods that are a dark maroon color and beat to death from years of use. I have stripped one of all hardware and grips and sanded them to bare fiberglass carefully. It's a two peice and the sections have been epoxied together. Now what I have done, You tell me if this is nuts! I took dark mahogany stain and stained the fiberglass to a rich brown color so that y

Ok, Thanks for the replys. I'll have to play with heights to see where I will be most comfortable. I was thinking a stool with wheels would be Ideal!

Seeker SJ-100 makes a nice rod and is rated about 2 to 4, The Lami SB-1213M is a very popular E-glass and rated for about what you need.

I'm no expert but seems to me it would be a case of leverage and as diameter increases it is weaker. Just my 2 cents and I might be way off mind you. I have seen two 8' S-glass rods fail almost in the same spot on the blank and built by the same guy. He claimed S-glass blanks are bad. I beleived it, but now that I know more about building I'm sure he wrapped them to tight. I have a S-glass rod bu

Tom the blank was just bought from Mud Hole and in the `08 Lami cat. I only see the one piece listed. I also bought a S-glass SSB1362M 1pc. Out of control!! I'm going to be getting some videos and books (like yours Tom) to get a better idea of what exactly to do. I might have the cart before the horse buying a bunch of blanks that I have, But these are rods that I have always wanted and now I can

I was hoping to build a nice rod for striper, blue ect. using a Penn Senator 113. I was figuring standard boat type guides no roller tip. I'm guessing it would be to weak for Tuna and such so I have a old Sabre to rebuild for that. To many projects!! Thanks Tom

I know, I know, To many noob questions LOL. I'm setting up to build a Lami honey SB1363M2 blank 2pc. The ferrule is what I'm asking about. Does this need a ferrule on it? How is this done? Meaning must it be Fibreglass or really any type of material? Metal ,graphite. I know a million questions! I have to get more books and videos to learn this stuff for sure. Once this rod building gets a hold

I recieved a Fenwick honey colored blank # LBE-729 problem is I'm not sure of the application or the line weight. I know it's a boat rod just not sure what type of set up it would need ie: Type of guides, Roller or ring, Aftco type butt and seat?? I'm guessing the line weight would determine this??

So Tom what your saying is instead of the lure having the weight and loading the rod, The rod is actually loading itself in a way! Right or am I way off? This Post is good, For a beginner it shows me how you guys think about the craft, and in a cival manor!

I'm working on a mold made of copper 1 1/2 x14" that will have a removable cap. The rod will extend through the cap and the cap will have a 1/4 inch hole on top to release pressure. I'll see how it goes I'm still in the building part of it and have to get my foam. I hope it's not a bomb!

Yes, I agree this site and magazine are a must. I'm just starting as well and have made a list of supplys and materials that I will be ordering all at once to keep shipping down. The Doc Ski videos are very good as well as Ken Prestons. check them out. Jim Uptons book is on my list, His seminars at the show were great and very understandable not over my head kind of stuff. I have a hard time believing that 316 or 304 stainless would rust. I could see 400 series SS rusting as I have seen it. My only fear about the titaniums is breakage, I could be wrong but they would seem to be more brittle then SS. I'm building for my self anyhow and I take very good care of my equipment. I have had very little problems over the years,I have some slight rust on a few guides after

I'm looking to build a 8' conventional surf rod on a fibreglass blank. With all the talk of weight on the rod would it be wise to use all titanium guides or am I asking for trouble or not worth it??

I'm far from an expert about blanks but a recent talk with my wifes uncle in Oregon about Sturgeon rods. He mentioned his halibut trips he takes and I asked about the rods he used a Seeker Classic SC6460XH. I think I have it right! He said it's a copy of a Sabre rod? Don't know if that helps!

Thanks guys, I kind of have an idea of what I want. The rollers look like something I would consider. I know for now this is just for myself but I see it could turn into a " Can you build me a rod?" type thing so I might want to get something a bit more.

I'm looking to buy a rod wrapper. I'm only building rods for myself (for now) so I don't need a major set up. i looked at the Flexcoat HW- 1 hand wrapper and GM-6 motor or should I get something with rollers? I'm building mostly surf rods from 7' to 11'. There are quite a few choices in all price ranges but I still don't want to get turned off by a cheap PIA to use wrapper. I have also thought ab
