1921. facts or opinions?
Is there any MEASURABLE difference in friction created by different ring materials used in guides? Is there any MEASURABLE difference in heat dissipation between different ring materials used in guides? If not I'll stick with weight, durability, and price.

Quite a few anglers on Florida's northeast coast use your fishing method with some spectacular results, especially with sharks. I'm sure Mudhole is acquainted with some of these specialists and might even be able to put you in touch with them.

As long as you won't be casting more than ten feet I recommend you get a copy of Mudhole's booklet "Building a Custom Offshore Fishing Rod". I have found Mudhole's rod building booklets quite helpful and their products and service highly satisfactory.

1924. Re: Surf Rod
Best if form follows function. Will this surf rod be used primarily as a bait rod or for casting artificial lures? What size fish will be targeted? How much weight will usually be casted? A too-heavy rod can be a handicap fishing for smaller species, like Pompano. A too light rod can't handle an 80# shark. It's like the difference between freshwater crappie fishing and muskie fishing.

Would ideal guide placement be any different if this were a two-piece rod blank instead of a one- piece rod blank?

Terry: There is absolutely no doubt rod materials have changed for the better, and these changes can be measured/quantified. There has been little change in advertising buzz-words and come -ons.

I'll second Donald's recommendation of REC snake guides - but stick with the standard, not the lightweight REC snakes. When struck they tend to "back out" from under their wrapping, sometimes even with a forhan wrap. I do not use REC stripping guides or tip-tops. They are both ugly and the strippers are noisy when line flows through them. I have used rods built with freshwater component

Terry: Thanks for your concern, but after decades of disappointments I have learned to ignore descriptions such as "new" and "improved" and "soulful" and "sensitive" when used to describe products for sale and stick to measurable benefits and price to select the products I buy. In the case of the groceries you mention I look at price, weight, expiration dat

Let's not forget about the rod with the smoothest action as well as the most sensitive. Every other advertisement makes this claim.

Tom, I build fly rods, surf rods, spinning rods, casting rods, and trolling rods. I have been building rods since 1957 and I want to keep up to date. I asked a reasonable question: How can I measure the sensitivity of the rods I build, like I measure the power and action of rods I build? Your suggestion "use the search button" got me nowhere. If rod sensitivity is a real phenomenon ther

Oops, forgot! Solid Niobium guides also for maximum sensitivity.

Got it. Graphite grips, spine up on spin rods, down on conventional rods, 0000 thread, one coat of clear lacquer.

How should the spine of the rod blank be alined to produce the most sensitivity? Is it the same for both spin rods and conventional rods? What grips, guides, threads, and finish produce the most sensitive rod? Is there any website where this information is available? I would like to read it and think about it.

I fish mostly with a fly rod where sensitivity is not much of an issue but action and power are. Is sensitivity the same as power, or action, or both? When I fish with bait I use circle hooks exclusively, so I do not rely upon rod sensitivity to set the hook. In what fishing situations is sensitivity important?

How is "sensitivity" measured or is it a matter of opinion? If it's a measurable quality I would be very interested in learning these measurements. Opinions? Not so much.

If you are fortunate enough to be a fly-tier before you become a rod-maker you can put your thread spool on a fly-tying bobbin, weight the bobbin to the thread tension you desire, tilt the rod blank to the angle you want and wrap away. You can even do this in your easy chair!

How does the altitude of a rod dryer affect how epoxy cures on the rod blank?

If you tape guides to the rod you can easily move the guides after you test cast it to find which guide placement works best - a truly custom built rod. If you can't tell the difference between two different guide placements use either one.

REC makes a lightweight nickel/titanium alloy snake guide which is very flexible. Seems like they would be ideal for a bamboo rod.

While fishing tackle manufacturers in the U.S.A. are close to extinction fishing tackle importers are flourishing. You may have noticed how few fishing products have "Made in America" labels . Importers profit most by selling you the product name, not the product. Identical or nearly identical imported products vary wildly in price according to name/label, advertising, and packaging. I'

Depends on what you will use your rod for. If you use it for trout, bass - freshwater fish - a click pawl drag will do fine and shouldn't cost you more than $125. If you go after salt-water fish, anadromous spawning fish, big carp or muskies you might want to get a large-spool disk-drag reel capable of holding a full #9 floating line and 75 yards or so of #30 backing.

I have never "test casted" spinning rods or revolving spool rods for distance or accuracy, although I have test casted fly rods for distance, if not accuracy. I assume such tests are done using only one type and size of line and one casting weight? How many test casts do you need to make your choice, and is it an average or the best result?

So much for my hopes of finding a one-size-fits-all guide placement table - like manufactured rods have. But then if I built out a blank using the manufacturer's guide placements I would be building a copy of a manufactured rod, ignoring how and what the rod will be used for, guide selection, guide spacing, and type of line flowing through the guides. Unless the custom rod's buyer wants to use th

Without referring to charts and formulas is there any way to just look at a rod under strain to determine ideal guide placements? What would be the critical thing to look for?
Forum: rodboard 5 years ago
Phil Ewanicki
Don't you have to determine what line will be used in this rod/reel setup? It seems like #30 gelspun braid would behave much differently in the guide train than #30 monofilament and result in significantly different line slap issues?

It seems a paracord grip would quickly raise blisters on a fly caster, or a spin caster, or a bait caster, or anyone who didn't put their rod in a holder and wait for a hit? I'll bet other rod builders/anglers could use some education about the purpose and uses of cord grips?

1950. Re: Sturgeon rod build
It's not the target species but the amount of power the rod can provide versus the amount of sensitivity the rod can provide which should influence your blank choice. I can't think of much that influences selection of a rod blank besides the trade-off between power and sensitivity and the trade-off between length and weight which determine rod choice. Well, price and guarantee are also consider
