Wondering if anyone has built the Pac Bay A4 fly seat as a spinning seat with hidden front hood. I am most concerned if it will accept a normal lite spinning reel foot, like a Shimano 750 or 1000 series.
Thanks and Merry Christmas,
Marc

I am working on some UL spinners that have a butt dia. less than 0.250" I am looking for cork rings with small I.D. to leave something to ream. I know I have seen some with 0.187" I.D., but not at a sponsors site, and I do like to keep my business within our sponsors.
Thanks,
Marc

I have been building a lot of spinning rods with high frame M style guides for the butt guide. I know they hold up fine for me, but wondering if anyone sees how they hold up for customers - who are too often not so careful.
Thanks,
Marc

Hey Buddy - I really agree with everything you said. A rod only needs to be sensitive enough to feel a fish. I doubt that tiny differences in sensitivity actually would make a difference in feeling or not feeling a hit. Just like the one piece vs. two pc. debate - could you ever actually feel a hit with a one piece rod that you wouldn't with a good two piece - no way.

OK - this was sparked by the post I just read on resonant frequency, and Tom's reply. When I build walleye rods, I can get a 6'or 6'6" to balance perfectly, so you feel no tip weight at all, without adding weight to the butt. Jump to 7' or longer, and it gets hard to achieve that "weightless" feeling, without adding slight counter weight.
Would this not tell us that the most

Well, I don't know if I fall in to the expert category, but I have found the Batson RX7's, to be a close match for the older Avids. I agree - not such a big fan of the new ones.

Hey Brian,
No you are not an idiot. If you really want to see a difference in test casting, try doing something like cast a rod with 8# line, then cast the same rod with 4# line. You will see massive differences. Mess with different guide set ups for days on end, and you will see minimal, if any differences.

Tom Juster,
I have to agree with a lot of what you said. I may take a whupping for this, but I think who benefits most from Fuji's Concept Guide System is - Fuji!! I have built identical rods, one NGC, the other with a basic set up I use on all spinning rods, one size 16 or 20 butt guide, one size 8 or 10 transition guide, and #6's the rest of the way, test cast side by side, and can tell n

Is there any benefit to a kayak rod being a 2 pc. over a 1 pc.?

I have a local canoe and kayak dealer that was asking about rods for kayak fishing. I have never been in a kayak, and was wondering what you would look for in a kayak rod design. Freshwater fishing, one model for panfish, one for bass-walleye.

I'll have to try that Tom! Reading that made me laugh and smile, because I can just see that guy soaking up something like that HM12 idea. He would probably brag to all his customers that he's the only shop that carries it.
Talk to you soon Rich.

Hey Rich,
Didn't know you were so close. I have seen the same thing - residents of Northern WI don't much care for decorative stuff - ahhhh, but those summer tourists are another story. I have talked to many of the local guides and sport shops, and so many have no idea what really enhances performance and just repeat what they have been told. Talked to a shop owner last week that wanted not

Just wondering what anyone finds is the most popular type artwork with customers. I seem to have a lot of customers that like the marbling jobs or custom grips, and less and less that prefer thread work. Feather inlays, decals, even colored guide rings - anything else that dresses up a rod?

As far as making guide wraps go easier, good guide foot prep is the single biggest thing I found that makes a difference. A dremmel and a coarse grit sanding drum are a good way to get started, and make sure to use some fine sandpaper or a stone to remove sharp edges when done. A beltsander is the ultimate if you have one, and I polish the prep job with a Unified Wheel from Bingham Enterprises

Sorry - gotta finish my own thought. Has anyone else seen this on other "Good" rods, Loomis, Lamiglas?

I did a repair on a 6'0" Avid UL today, stripped and replaced all guides. The guide prep was about the same as Pac Bay guides come, and to get the thread to climb the poor prep job it looked like they use size D. Seen this in import rods before, but kinda disappointed.

Hey Tom, in all the sensitivity testing and analyzing that has been done, has anyone actually tested one pc. vs. two pc. rods. I have read all the articles in Rodmaker regarding sensitivity, did I miss this part? Any info would be great, as I get clobbered all the time by guys that won't look at two pc. rods, even if it may be a better choice for them.

So if you can't tell from other posts, I love TN grips on spinning rods, and would use them on every build if I could convince customers. So many guys don't want anything to do with 2 pc. rods because of sensitivity loss - so I have been asking them why do they insist on 2 pc handle assemblys?
It actually gets their attention!!!!! Give it a shot.
OK - there is my tiny little contribution

I don't have the direct comparison info you are looking for, but have used a lot of American Tackle's Ring Lock's, and they are great!!! The quality is at least equal to, if not better than Fuji, and they are also offered in colored rings that really set-off a rod. They are verry lite and verry tuff. Hands down American Tackle!!!!!

Used to do a lot of fly fishing before I got in to rod building, so my experience is with factory rods. I always felt the single foot guides cast farther with less effort, and if you were lucky enough to fish so much as to wear down the guide wraps, probably after 10-20 years, I would say you got your money's worth out of that rod. I think the sales person is selling you on his preferences.

Just wondering what everyone sees. Do you see many people still buying rods at smaller independant tackle or bait & tackle shops, or mostly the big Cabelas, Bass Pro, Gander Mountains? Obviously, as custom builders we won't be selling at a meg-store, but there are lots of contacts to be made at the smaller shops.
If you don't mind, please post where you are in the US - it's neet to see i

I still use Flex Coat rod builders epoxy for installing reel seat arbors. I find I can get it to flow and minimize clean up after installing. Wondering if anyone has any tricks for using a gel type (especially Lamar's) epoxy, and keeping clean up of the reel seat down?
Thanks,
Marc

869. Re: rod tip removal
Check the rod over good before putting too much time in on it. I saw several of these at the Bass Pro in Gurnee, IL where the reel seat would break loose and spin if you barely touch it.

For spinning reels, it's really tough to beat either Stren or Trilene. I have never had a problem with break offs, and the idea that you could use 30# line on a walleye rod because it is 8# dia. doesen't blow my hair back. I have landed more 10# plus fish on 4# mono than I can remember (not all walleyes though!). I think the no-stretch heavy pound super braids account for a lot more busted rod
