2671. Re: When lathes attack
Had a machine shop teacher in high school who did the same thing with a drill press, but he was scalped with a 3 inch patch off the top of his head. Hippies beware around machinery!!....LOL

2672. Re: rod sizing
I have built my grandsons (11 & 7) 7ft 4wt fly rods and they have no problems fishing them once they get the hang of fly casting. I think in a couple of years, I'll go longer and heavier.
By the way Roger, he said he" wants to build Fly rods"

2673. Re: switch rod handle
Maryann, as I understand surf rods they are always cast two handed, a switch rod is meant to be cast either single or two handed, this requires that the upper hand is placed in two different ares when changing casting methods.

2674. Re: switch rod handle
The reason it is large, is because when single handling it, you grasp it just above the reel seat and when two handing, you grip much higher up to create the pivot pint for the Spey casting. Eliminating the length by very much will no longer enable one to "switch" effectively. I agree that the handles that appear to be "two glued together" are not attractive, so I build mine

2675. Re: Guide sizing
Go to the Batson web site where they have a recipe for each blank, it's a good starting point. You can modify as you see fit from there.

Light colored threads will darken on a dark blank even with CP. If you want to maintain the light color, many print the blank whit under where the wrap is placed.

Your right....."that's not enough!" It needs go dry to the spot it will seat, snugly but not forced. Better to start over, as otherwise it will always be a repair job.

What type of rod is this? Fly, spinning, or? If it is a fly rod, it could be fairly simple to remove off the butt end and reverse if off with out damage.

2679. Re: Fly rod?
If you are going with any of the Batson blanks, their web site will provide a "building specs" sheet for each. It is a great starting point and you can deviate from it as you wish. I also highly recommend the Batson over the TFO both for performance and quality! The 10wt is overkill for most Alaska species.

No reason to use "D" , "A" works fine. Have you picked a blank yet?

2681. Re: cork ring glue ?
The epoxy will work, but may give you a more apparent seam and be harder to get level with the cork when sanding. A better option is Titebond lll, it is waterproof and used extensively for this purpose by many builders.

Burnt or speckled cork has to be held together by an adhesive so it naturally going to be heavier the plain cork. Worrying about the slight amount of weight in an accent (most likely in the grip area) seems unproductive!

As Roger states above, it is a common problem when you combine materials of different densitys. To work them effectively, you must take special care to not cut the softer cork below the level of the other material. Also as Roger mentions using a flat block to sand allows you to better take down the harder substance to a level with the cork. I also find I can use a very sharp tool such as a small

NCP thread has chalk added to create the opacity and it is likely that the chalk causes the black to become somewhat gray! It is also this chalk that gives the colors of NCP a "flat" look that some describe as looking like paint. In my opinion NCP will not give you color vibrancy that you can get by using regular nylon and CP.

Why would one put CP on NCP (no color preserver) thread in the first place? You don't mention the other problems your having with other colors fading, are you using NCP or regular nylon?

What ever you use, be sure it is compatible with the decal! Some have solvents that will harm the decal.

Many of us put the foam core on a mandrel and then place the sleeve on the core, then apply the epoxy. This the open method as perfected by J P Timberlake.

2689. Re: color preserver
Light threads on a dark blank will always darken without color preserver (or NCP) as they become somewhat transparent. The use of, or omission CP is a personal choice either of the client or the builder. I personally much prefer the understated look of no CP on the fly rods I build.

Flex Coat makes a "guide adhesive" that works very well! It is similar to the rod tip adhesive, but not as hard a grip. It is strong enough that it will hold large guides and is perfect for the smallest guides where there is less room for tape or bands, yet it allows movement for adjusting after the wrap. I use it exclusively for the fly rods I build.

2691. Re: Hole Saw on EVA
If you can get EVA in 1/2" thick pieces that would make using the hole saw much easier as it would not fill so deeply. Also if you have drill press, running the hole saw at high speed in the cutting direction will work if you proceed cutting very very slowly. Cut and lift the saw frequently to keep it clear and avoid it binding up.

I find it easier to match the thread colors to the wood or bark, rather then the other way around. There is a big variation in coloring of Birch Bark, sometimes even within the same piece of bark. I assume the bark will absorb the stain much more readily then the wood, especially hardwoods, so you could have trouble try to "even out" the color.

Also a 1 1/2" length will not fit into the jig to the depth you need to use it. 1/2" or less is best.

Unless you used the "quik Bond", the regular Rod Bond takes 24 hours to cure.

2696. Re: Invisible wrap
I use denatured alcohol and thin the epoxy to an almost water like consistency Thinned this way it penetrates and seals, but takes longer to cure, I allow 72 hours before the final coat...un-thinned.. Doing it this way it should come our water clear with the guide feet and blank showing through as though there is no thread warp.
I was going to email you direct, but your email is hidden.

2697. Re: Invisible wrap
If you are going to over wrap with silk and you want absolute clarity in the silk, you should use the Gossomer 00 white silk and thin the first coat of epoxy so as to get through penetration. As the 00 is extremely fine diameter you will have problems wrapping it over a larger diameter thread base, it will want to slip in between the base threads. A coat of epoxy on the base wrap could help with

There have been numerous posts on the subject of dying or staining cork. It can be done as a surface treatment only, as it is a closed cell structure and liquids (any type) will not penetrate the cells. The surface can be colored by many types of colorants and the coloring can be over coated to seal the surface, but one must keep in mind the surface that yo\u will end up with after the over-coati

A drying box or cabinet can achieve the same result in any weather conditions. The downside is the room necessary for the cabinet.
